Istituto Oikos http://www.istituto-oikos.org/ is an Italian no profit association that works in Europe and in the developing countries to promote environmental conservation as tool of socio-economic development. Today, Istituto Oikos manages more than 30 projects in 6 countries.
Background: Istituto Oikos, in partnership with the Maasai community of Mkuru, constituted "Mkuru Training Camp", a camp created with the purpose of testing and promoting appropriate technologies and innovative approaches to make environment conservation a key point of the socio-economic development of the area. More than 2.000 people have been trained at Mkuru in last years. The camp also acts as field base for Istituto Oikos staff involved in conservation and development projects in the area. Mkuru Training Camp is located at the foot of Mount Meru, a few kilometers from Arusha National Park, in a strategic location, in the beautiful but fragile and complex natural system of the Meru-Kilimanjaro. In 2012 Oikos decided to open the camp to a wider public, with the aim of transforming MTC into an economically sustainable centre, reference point for enthusiasts of environment and development, researchers or volunteers, interested to provide their energies and skills to assist local communities in the path towards a more equitable and sustainable use of natural resources (www.mkurutrainingcamp.org).
Position description: Project Manager of Mkuru Training Camp (MTC), at start up phase, as international experimental station of environmental sustainability.
The position includes the following responsibilities: - To assess the existing MTC camp management, programme and institutional functions and, based on that review, to elaborate a strategy to improve them, in view of competitions with similar facilities. - To develop a Business Plan aimed at reaching MTC economic sustainability, through the development and marketing of the cultural, educational, recreational offer of the centre, among the local and international public. - To elaborate and implement a strategy to market MTC and its programs. - To facilitate networking and to promote the camp at local and international level, including activities of fund-raising. - To collaborate with the local Camp Manager in the organization and overall management of the camp (development of internal procedures, logistics and camp maintenance, personnel management, asset management and stock control, security, organization of training activities). - To train the local staff to perform the assigned functions. - To manage the administration of the camp and the annual budget, in collaboration with/under the supervision of the Administrative Department of Istituto Oikos in Tanzania - To supervise the training, research and awareness activities carried out at MTC. - To collaborate and mediate with the Maasai community to ensure the development of synergies and the implementation of programs at MTC customized to the needs and expectations of the community.
General Supervisor: He/She will report to the Country Representative of Istituto Oikos in Tanzania. He/She will also report to the Director of Oikos East Africa for the issues related with the community relation.
Assignment Period: 15 January 2013 for one year with possibility of extension.
Base of job: Mkuru Training Camp (1,5 hours drive from Arusha town) Arusha Region – Tanzania
Requirements: Previous experience in camp management, possibly in Africa Knowledge of No-profit sector, strong commitment to teamwork; effective communication, motivating leadership and interpersonal skills. Reporting capacity.
Languages: Proficiency in English is a must. Swahili knowledge is an added value.
