The Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) is supporting the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) secretariat and its member states to capitalize on the potential of the Analytical Fingerprint (AFP) method. This includes full skills, technology, and ownership transfer for the AFP method into the Great Lakes region. AFP has been developed as a method from 2006-2010 as an independent means of verification for the origin of conflict minerals (cassiterite, coltan, and wolframite) which are subject to supply chain due diligence.
In the context of moving the AFP method from scientific development into the operational stage, ICGLR & BGR are setting up a Management Unit to coordinate AFP application and its seamless integration into the Regional Certification Mechanism (RCM). The position as coordinator advertised here corresponds to the head of the AFP Management Unit (AMU) to be established at the ICGLR secretariat in Bujumbura, Burundi.
Tasks and Responsibilities
The AMU shall be embedded into the RCM management structure to be established by the ICGLR secretariat. At present, this structure is hosted by the ICGLR’s Democracy and Good Governance program and the coordinator reports to the Program Director. In case of reorganization of the existing management structure on the Initiative on Natural Resources of ICGLR the new organizational structure shall apply. As such, the coordinator will then report to the assigned supervisor within this structure. Technical steering for the position will also be provided by BGR in the framework of ICGLR/BGR technical cooperation.

The position is based in Bujumbura, Burundi. Regional-international travel will be expected on occasion. ICGLR/BGR contract duration is fixed for 2 years (with a three-month probationary period), with a view to mobilizing ICGLR funding for future contracts.
