The health care waste management (HCWM) advisor is an integral member of the Kenya project team. The advisor will provide technical leadership in the area of HCWM for the project. This will include playing a critical role in shaping all aspects of the five-year project strategy and overall work plan.
The project goal is to support improved and sustainable medical waste management systems in Kenya by implementing a three-pronged approach: strengthen the HCWM system, increase capacity in the procurement and commodity management systems, and encourage healthy behavior among health workers and the community.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Working with the Ministry of Medical Services, Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation, Health and Human Services/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief partners to develop a comprehensive project strategy that will support ongoing efforts to implement a national HCWM plan in Kenya.
- Working with the Hospital Management (HMTs) Teams and District Health management Teams (DHMTs) to develop and execute health care waste management plans for the health facilities and districts
- Supporting the Procurement and Logistics Advisor by assisting with the development of a comprehensive strategy and procurement plan for the distribution of HCWM commodities.
- Collaborating with key in-country partners and organizations to strategically promote, inform, and build capacity for HCWM interventions.
- Developing and advancing standards, guidelines, and tools related to HCWM best practices.
- Leading, facilitating, and participating in HCWM training workshops and providing on-the-job training as needed.
- Supporting the implementation of a facility needs assessment to inform the development of a HCWM commodity management quantification tool.
- Developing strategies for engaging other donors and/or partners in promoting HCWM approaches.
- Proven effectiveness working independently and as a team member.
- Organized, responsible, and concise in order to meet reporting requirements and deadlines.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, and Excel).
- Ability to travel in country to support technical activities.
- A good grasp of technical issues related to the management of healthcare waste in the Kenya and global context.
- Bachelors degree in public health or environmental health science or equivalent experience preferred, a masters degree in a related field will be an added advantage
- At least five years of experience in HCWM, or a related field.
- Experience working with the Kenyan Ministries of Health and partners in the health sector.
- A good grasp of technical issues related to the management of health care waste in the Kenyan and global context.
- Demonstrated experience successfully managing multiple tasks with competing priorities
