In its new role, subject to parliamentary approval, Monitor’s core duty will be to protect and promote the interests of patients by ensuring economic, efficient and effective healthcare service provision that also maintains or improves the quality of those services. To do this, Monitor will license providers of NHS-funded services in England, regulate prices, enable integrated care, prevent anti-competitive behaviour and ensure service continuity in the event of provider failure.
The Chief Economist will play a crucial role in establishing this nationally important remit for Monitor. As economic adviser to Monitor’s Board, the Chief Economist will contribute to key decisions, lead economic research across Monitor and provide professional leadership to all its economists. You will also work closely with other key stakeholders such as government departments and other health agencies to guide policy development across the health system reform agenda. Candidates will be established and successful economists, with a track record of leading an economics team across an organisation with a keen interest in guiding the application of economic regulation to the health service.
