About the project
Consumption of charcoal in urban households is the main cause of deforestation in the surrounding area of Lusaka. An average household in Lusaka consumes approximately 1.3 tonnes of charcoal per year, which consumes approximately 8 tonnes of biomass, mostly trunks and thick branches, for production. Charcoal is transported over distances of up to hundreds of kilometres and the radius of devastated land is enlarging due to increasing demand on charcoal for the rising number of urban households. The purpose of the project activity is to provide 30,000 households of Lusaka city with highly efficient cooking systems to replace the consumption of charcoal. Currently, about 25.000 households are already part of the project.
