National Agricultural Research Organization is implementing a public-private partnership project with international, regional and local institutions on water efficient maize for Africa (WEMA). The project aims to improve food security and rural livelihoods among small-scale maize producers in Africa by developing drought tolerant-hybrid maize varieties. This Project is funded through African Agricultural Technology Foundation by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Howard Buffet Foundation. Feed the Future initiative of USAID is also supporting NARO to improve food security, health and nutrition.
NARO is seeking for dynamic scientists and technicians to implement project activities under the cereals program at the National Crops Resources Research Institute as follows
PLANT BREEDER (Maize) 1 Position WEMA
Tasks and Responsibilities:
Designing plant breeding strategies for the short and long term goals and objectives.
Contribute to develop research objectives, design, and data analysis to achieve the desired objectives.
Conducting participatory evaluation and breeding for desirable traits.
Coordinate, and evaluate performance trials, breeding nurseries, and experiments.
Contribute to effective communication and synergy between the desired maize trait and the general breeding program.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary research team.
Assist with the coordination of research activities, e.g. guide research assistants, technicians and students.
Requirement:
Required Skills/Experiences:
PhD in plant breeding and genetics, or closely related disciplines with a strong background in plant breeding, genetics, field based research, statistical analysis, molecular biology and molecular marker applications.
Proficiency with database applications, data analysis and spreadsheet software.
Salary: - USD/month
