African Barrick Gold seeks to appoint an experienced Geotechnical / Rock Mechanics Engineer at our Bulyanhulu underground mining operations in Tanzania. Being part of the technical services team, the successful person will report directly to the Geotechnical Superintendent.
KEY RESULT AREAS/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Under the guidance of the Senior Geotechnical engineer, provide geotechnical input into mine planning and design together with the development and implementation of safe, cost effective ground support systems.
• Undertake stability assessments of underground workings and infrastructure.
• Use geotechnical mapping and logging to classify rock mass and hence apply the same data on stope design and mine layouts to ensure that ore extraction proceeds promptly and safely.
• Use structural stability methods, empirical assessment and numerical modelling to arrive at ultimate support systems and determine optimum pillar sizes and stoping sequences to ensure stability of underground structures.
• Advise and assist mine operating officials on ground control methods to ensure optimum utilization of the available ore reserves and human resources engaged in ground control activities.
• Carry out regular monitoring of support systems (eg pull tests) to ensure that the recommended support is adhered to.
• Measure rock strength, rock stress changes, deformation and monitoring seismic activities using different Rock Mechanics instrumentation to ensure stability of underground and surface structures.
• Ensure that Geotechnical staff are well trained to improve on the quality of services offered to the mining department and ensure compliance with BGML’s policies and procedures.
• Act as a liaison between planning and operations departments coordinating rock engineering efforts towards short-term objectives.
• Design and monitoring of ground support, backfill systems, and control instrumentation.
• Report in writing geotechnical analyses, risk assessment and inspection.
• Identify areas for the application of Continuous Improvement (CI) initiatives
• Other duties may be assigned depending on mine requirements.
