Job summary
Reporting to the Head of Health and working closely with other staff to support the delivery of the Health Section’s mandates. S/he supports advocacy, knowledge generation, partnership building and other strategies and models; investigates and initiates programmes relevant for the realisation of the Commonwealth Secretariat Health Programmes and will be required, under guidance, to liaise with Governments' representatives, technical experts and partners.
The post holder will:
- Work with Health Section staff in acting as the co-ordinator for preparations for the 2013 Commonwealth Health Ministers’ Meeting (CHMM). The person will be required to work closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure effective co-ordination of preparations for CHMM;
- Provide professional assistance with regards to the strategic implementation of the Health Section programmes; support the Section’s networking and partnership building with civil society and private sector;
- Provide support role in the design, development and delivery of priority programmes and activities that promote the achievement of assigned theme related MDG targets and outputs;
- Contribute and support the drafting of key advocacy messages, speeches and health briefs;
- Compile and monitor progress reports as required;
- Support the implementation of the Secretariat’s Health initiatives; liaise with relevant divisions within the Secretariat to support a more consistent focus and delivery of health results, support key stakeholders;
- Co-ordinate and organize meetings, workshops and relevant events, develop and generate appropriate gender analytical inputs, polices, proposals, reports, briefs and perform other ad hoc duties as required;
- Contribute to the preparation of Ministerial gender briefs, Section and Divisional briefs;
- Support work on publications including compiling information, conducting desk research and updating material for the website and other electronic fora. Liaise with the Publications and Printing Unit as required.
Person Specification:
Education:
Essential
- A degree in development studies, health studies, the humanities, social sciences or related field.
Desirable
- A post-graduate degree with specialisation in development, health studies, development or related area.
Experience:
Essential
- At least 3 years of relevant work experience in administrative roles;
- Experience in conference management/logistics;
- Sound analytical skills, in-depth knowledge of health issues and systems, analytical tools and strategies;
- Proven capacity to network and build effective partnerships on programmes/project activities to meet set goals and targets;
- Ability to deal tactfully with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.
Desirable
- Experience of working in/with more than one Commonwealth country on health and development issues would be an advantage;
- Experience in an international development organization, or comparable experience in the public/private sector;
- Knowledge or familiarity with networks and NGOs pertaining to health and women's political rights, peace and conflict management.
