Deputy Team Leader – Australia Awards in Africa
Based in Pretoria, South Africa

DURATION: 1 April – 31 December 2013, with possible 12-month extension
Australia Awards in Africa (AAA) is an AusAID-funded initiative designed: (i) to equip Africans with the skills and knowledge necessary to influence the economic and social development outcomes of their own countries; and (ii) to build the long-term capacity of African governments to provide a range of essential services, strengthen law and justice systems, improve transparency and achieve reforms to meet their own development challenges, particularly to progress towards their Millennium Development Goals.
AAA provides a mix of Long-Term and Short Awards to Africans in the public, civil society and private sectors in targeted disciplines that support the home countries’ developmental priorities. Currently, 51 African countries participate in the AAA program. AAA currently funds 400 Long-Term and 600 Short Awards annually.
AAA is managed by GRM International through a Program Office in Pretoria, South Africa and through Hub Offices in Nairobi, Kenya and Brisbane, Australia. The Program employs a team of about 60 full-time staff.
Based in Pretoria, the Deputy Team Leader (DTL) is responsible for overseeing and directing all operational aspects of the AAA Long-Term and Short Course Awards, through effective day-to-day management of Awards processes and teams. The position also provides strategic support to the Team Leader through key inputs in to planning and reporting processes and documentation
The Deputy Team leader must have:
- High level leadership experience in donor project management
- Proven ability in the direction of high-volume operations
- Track record of success in the development of policy, systems and processes
- Demonstrated capacity to work to tight deadlines with competing demands
- Knowledge of and familiarity with the Australian tertiary education sector
- Strong understanding of the application of IT systems to business processes
- Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated capacity to work sensitively in a cross-cultural environment in the developing world
- Outstanding presentation and communication skills
- Excellent writing skills, including the ability to edit reports prepared by others
Additional attributes that will be highly valued in this position are:
- Postgraduate qualifications in education, business management or another relevant field
- Experience in managing a scholarships program
- Significant experience in the developing world, preferably Africa
