General Manager - Shipyard
Main Purpose of the Job
Deliver against agreed group strategic and financial goals by building and developing a unique value proposition which positions the company as the preferred agent for shipyard and dry-docking facilities. The key measurable target will be the performance revenue delivered from the operations turnover, profitability and maximization of assets.
Reporting to the Group Management Committee, the General Manager will oversee the general management as well as the commercial and financial development of the Business Unit. The position will suit a candidate with a strong entrepreneurship spirit and a taste for challenge. You will be part of a dynamic team with strong development ambitions.
Key Job Tasks and Responsibilities
- Leadership and management
- To lead and manage cross functional departmental teams within the company including those of the production, procurement, accounts, stores, sales and marketing and human resource departments.
- Manage, lead and oversee all aspects of daily operations and all facets of projects execution including those maintaining quality standards, cost effectiveness and time management ensuring projects are on time and within budget
- Business development
- Develop and execute business expansion / diversification plans
- Capture market intelligence, provide key inputs for tenders and pricing
- Maintain a documented sales pipeline, with all relevant details regarding each target, their requirements and needs, information regarding key decision makers and influencers and other relevant data
- Customer focus
- Establish relationships with existing and potential clients to position the company as the preferred agents at all times
- Build and maintain key relationships at senior level with target customers, including owners and managers
- Human resource, conflict management, managing and developing others
- Develop the local content within the construction activities of the shipyard by recruiting and training local human resources
- Resolves conflicts, confrontations and disagreements in a positive and constructive manner.
- Strives for win-win solutions.
- Ensures staffs are appropriately selected, utilized, appraised and developed.
- Motivates and guides toward goal accomplishment.
- Project management
- Conduct formal and informal assessments and evaluations of project performance through the analysis and interpretation of objective and subjective evidence Assess/Manage project risks and opportunities
- Prepare and present project performance reports to management, analyze variances and recommend appropriate corrective action to management, track progress and exercise judgment in determining matters of significance and scale appropriately
- Accountable for adherence to company policies and procedures, contractual requirements and expectations.
- Develop and maintain good relationships with all projects stakeholders: review and interpret designs, drawings & specifications, recommend changes to the plans and specifications to meet actual – project or job conditions; consults with all stakeholders as necessary, implement and manage to acceptable construction practices, as requested review vessel project proposals; review all planning data; evaluate scheduling and practical engineering feasibility.
- Financial management
- Experience with Profit and Loss.
- Prepares, justifies and administers budgets.
- Plans, administers and monitors expenditures to ensure cost effective support of programmes and policies.
- Monitors, oversees and controls revenue generating activities.

Competencies Required
- Education
- Minimum Education: Bachelor’s Degree - Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering or Structural Engineering or similar qualification with a strong technical background.
- Having MBA in Management / Financial Management will be an added advantage.
- Alternatively the candidate may have minimum master’s degree in business management or financial management degree with experience in working in industrial and technical fields.
- Experience
- Minimum 8-10 years experience as a profit centre head of a in a shipyard, ship repair site, engineering industry or similar industry. In-depth knowledge of all business functions associated with shipyard and general engineering management
- Proven ability to work in a challenging , dynamic and stressful environment
- Experience working in Africa shall be an added advantage.
