Reporting to the Diamond Drilling Superintendent we seek to appoint a Diamond Drill Foreman at our Bulyanhulu gold mining operation in Tanzania. The incumbent will be responsible to provide leadership and technical expertise to ensure that Diamond Drilling operations efficiently produce quality core to maximize the geological information needed for interpretations and decision making by the Geology & Technical Departments.
KEY RESULT AREAS/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Provide leadership to ensure that all diamond drill personnel adhere to safety standards that exceed industry practice and any applicable legislative provisions.
• Must be prepared to work night shifts if required on a weekly rotation basis to provide full supervisory cover.
• Focus on building a team based environment & ensure that drill rig crews & maintenance staff have all the resources they require to safely & efficiently carry out their jobs & maximize productivity.
• Lead in the continuous improvement of safe working & drilling.
• Achievement of agreed targets for the department in terms of:
• Adherence to 5 point safety system
• Minimum core loss
• Maximum drill efficiencies & productivity
• Maximum availability of machines
• Set-up of rigs within accuracy standards
• 100% completion of scheduled down hole surveys
• Tidy presentation of core
• Complete & accurate reporting
• Briefing & De-briefing of drilling crews at the commencement and completion of shift, including a thorough hand over to the next shift’s supervisor.
• Provide Senior Geology personnel with accurate daily reports with regard to drilling operations underground.
• Immediately report any sub-standard acts, unsafe & or unproductive conditions or equipment damage to superiors verbally & via incident reports.
• Ensure new drill sites are supported to standard, have proper drainage & sites are free of trip hazards.
• Manage rig moves to new sites ensuring they are carried out safely & efficiently – liaise with the relevant departments to ensure that all resources are arranged and provided for in advance to reduce down time.
• Manage preventative maintenance of diamond drill machines to maximize availability.
• Ensure efficient management of drilling & machine cooling water at drill sites.
• Carry out routine housekeeping inspections ensuring that high housekeeping standards are maintained & regular clean ups of underground drilling sites & the surface workshop are carried out.
• Maintain a thorough inventory of critical drilling consumables & machine parts at the surface workshop and immediately follow up shortages.
• Liaise with stores personnel to review & maintain quantity & quality control on Diamond Drill main warehouse inventories.
• Provide training, coaching and standards guidance to personnel to ensure they achieve full competency & productivity levels in specific job positions.
• Assist the Superintendent Diamond Drilling & Chief Geologist in reviewing every aspect of departmental operations to identify and implement opportunities to add value to the operation & company.
• Lead in the continuous improvement of existing underground drilling practices.
• Manage contractors and the practical aspects of short term surface drilling programs as required.
PROFESSIONAL SKILLS
Education Requirements:
• Trade or drilling certificate
Experience Requirements:
• Minimum 10 years Diamond Drilling, underground and surface.
• Minimum 2 years Diamond Drill Supervisory/ large drill program management experience.
• Efficient drilling techniques – including a sound knowledge of semi-directional drilling techniques
• Able to work & maintain varied mechanical equipment.
• Able to maintain accurate records.
• Clear and concise communicator – both written & verbally
• Computer literacy in Ms Word & Excel an advantage
• Knowledge of:
o Underground and surface diamond drill rigs and equipment.
o Machinery and mechanical equipment, particularly diamond drilling equipment maintenance.
o Exposure to computers & software (Pronto, Ms Office - Word, Excel, outlook)
o Experience in managing drilling contractors is desirable.
o Knowledge of parts and stores logistics.
