International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies
Travel through East Africa to research food security and community resilience initiatives designed to prevent droughts from becoming international emergencies.
This is a volunteer assignment under the Australian Volunteers for International Development (AVID) program, an Australian Government, AusAID initiative. Airfares, living allowances, accommodation, insurance and other support is provided through the program.
Background information
In many communities across East Africa, recurrent droughts have depleted natural resources, traditional coping strategies and livelihoods.
The International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) supports 11 national Red Cross societies in the region. Recognising that short-term relief will not end the recurrence of natural disasters, Red cross has embarked on a long-term strategy to increase community resilience to drought and other natural hazards.
An Australian volunteer has been requested to support IFRC in research and evaluation of food security and community resilience interventions in Kenya and other countries. The volunteer will support research on food security initiatives, irrigation systems and community resilience activities undertaken by Red Cross branches in Kenya. The role will include significant field travel for research purposes.
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- Work experience in research or monitoring & evaluation
- Experience in food security or livelihoods programs
- Qualifications in international development or a related field
- Self awareness, cultural sensitivity, flexibility and adaptability, resilience
To be eligible, applicants must be 18 years and over, Australian citizens or permanent residents, or New Zealand citizens with Special Category Visas.
