Investigative Journalism Expert , Mozambique

OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB

To lead an investigative journalism fellowship project, starting in February 2013. To train and mentor a group of Mozambican emerging journalists during a three to six month period based in Maputo, Mozambique.

MAIN DUTIES

1 Mentor of a group of six emerging journalists in investigative journalism for six months, both training and guiding them to complete reporting projects.

2 Teach final year students at least 3 hours per week on investigative journalism at Eduardo Mondlane University’s School of Communications and Arts (ECA).

3 Provide and/or develop additional seminars and workshops.

4 Contribute to the scouting of talented journalism students and young reporters to be selected for MSP fellowships.

5 Manage the performance of the mentee journalists and conduct regular checks on their work. In addition, provide detailed feedback at regular meetings, conducting a monthly appraisal with mentees, address issues of performance and identify training and development needs.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

1 Strong written and oral communication skills in Portuguese and English;

2 Ability to train, teach, and mentor young journalists and journalism students;

3 Ability to write and copy edit accurately and quickly;

4 Strong technical and computer skills, including multimedia production skills and digital reporting;

5 Experience in teaching and facilitating;

6 Minimum of 15 years of proven journalism practice; and

7 Ability to be patient and systematic.

COMPENSATION:
IREX Mozambique offers competitive remuneration and benefits for this position. This is an unaccompanied position; IREX does not pay for family members.
