The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to enhance the roles livestock play in pathways out of poverty in developing countries. ILRI seeks to recruit a Scientist; Animal health assessment and product delivery to identify and prioritize animal health constraints and solutions to improved productivity in smallholder livestock production systems and to facilitate the delivery of appropriate solutions through collaboration with key delivery institutions.
Responsibilities
- Develop and undertake projects to assess and prioritize animal health constraints in targeted livestock value chains.
- Develop and test methods for identifying appropriate pro-poor technological, management and institutional solutions to animal health constraints
- Engage and collaborate with other research and development groups, both public and private, to develop evidence based solutions.
- Develop protocols and pro-poor strategies for better animal husbandry, health and nutritional management that are viable from both technical and socio-economic perspective
- Contribute to the development and dissemination of metrics and tools for data collection and analysis in the context of pro-poor whole-chain approaches to animal and human health
- Facilitate the delivery of appropriate solutions through collaboration with key delivery institutions in the target value chains and, where appropriate, contribute to promoting technological and institutional change.
- Be active in seeking external funding for the above activities
Requirements
- B.V.Sc., DVM or BSc/MSc in animal health sciences;
- Ph.D. in epidemiology of infectious diseases or relevant animal health/production related subject;
- Training in economics or other social sciences an advantage;
- Five years relevant post-doctoral experience.
Other Competencies
- Epidemiology with a focus on infectious disease, animal health and animal husbandry practices;
- Experience in delivery of animal health products and management tools, especially in smallholder/pastoralist systems in a developing country;
- Familiarity with value chain approaches to pro-poor development, and capacity to work with actors at multiple levels of the value chain to identify and test animal health interventions;
- Formulation and delivery of tools and methods for data collection and analysis.
Post location: The position is based at ILRI’s Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.
Position level: The position is Scientist/Research Level 1 or 2 dependent on qualifications and experience.
Duration: 3 years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.
