REDD and Climate Change Manager

Position Objectives:
Manage WCS’s REDD Demonstration Activity and Climate Change Adaptation projects in Manus Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Oversee financial and administrative support for field activities. Facilitate coordination with the WCS Country and Marine offices and implementation partners, AusAID and PNG government through the Office of Climate Change and Development and PNG Forest Authority.
Principal Responsibilities:
In consultation and coordination with the Country Director of the WCS-PNG Program and WCS PNG Marine Program staff:
1. Manage WCS’s REDD+ Demonstration Activity and Climate Change Adaptation projects in Manus Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG);
2. Provide technical oversight of all aspects of a REDD project, including MRV, REL, benefit sharing distribution and land-use planning;
3. Coordinate and manage the logistical, administrative and financial management of relevant project initiatives and Manus field office;
4. Hire, train, and assist field staff in their projects; promote teamwork and provide feedback to staff; ensure proper collection, analysis and publication of field data; review and evaluate field reports and project documents;
5. Liaise between WCS and the Government of PNG, specifically through the Manus Provincial Government, the Office of Climate Change and Development and PNG Forest Authority, providing active support to national REDD policy development;
6. Manage donor relations;
7. In collaboration with WCS PNG Country Director and WCS Development staff develop proposals and participate in fundraising activities; identify new funding sources; maintain contact and ensure timely reporting with funding sources;
8. Produce reports and other required documents (e.g., work plans, implementation plans, annual reports, budget reports) for WCS and donors on schedule;
9. Write and publish documents, reports, books, and technical papers. Create or update program documents, brochures, newsletters, and other materials. Be active in professional societies, attending meetings, workshops, strategy sessions, etc; and
10. Contribute to, enlarge and uphold the WCS’s policies towards Equal Employment Opportunities for women, minorities, veterans, the handicapped, and other protected groups.
Qualifications, skills and experience
Applicants should have PhD or Masters degree with a background in REDD, forest conservation or forestry, preferably in a Melanesian or developing-world context; 3 years minimum management experience (e.g., managing large budgets, staff and liaison with government); ability to foster teamwork within the program; excellent interpersonal and communication skills with good technical writing skills; and an ability to work in a range of cultural contexts. Applicants should be comfortable living in remote locations, have excellent problem solving skills and be flexible to developing country constraints. The position is based in the field in Lorengau, Manus Province, PNG, but with considerable travel to the country office in Goroka and Port Moresby, PNG.

Candidates should be available to start as soon as possible. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
