Organizational Setting and Reporting
The internship is located at the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) in Vienna, Austria.
The intern will work under the direct supervision of Senior Programme Officer of the Space Applications Section.
The internship will include tasks under the overall plan of work of UNOOSA, which is responsible for promoting international cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space; and others implemented under the UN Programme for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response (UN-SPIDER). UN-SPIDER aims at providing universal access to all types of space-based information and services relevant to disaster management by being a gateway to space information for disaster management support; serving as a bridge to connect the disaster management and space communities; and being a facilitator of capacity-building and institutional strengthening.

Responsibilities
- The intern shall undertake the following duties which may include, but are not limited to:
- Support the preparation of country profiles for the advisory services of UN-SPIDER
- Assist the UN-SPIDER Team in providing technical advice to Member States on the use of Earth observation products
- Contributing to the collection of information on sources and characteristics of space-borne remote sensing data for the UN-SPIDER Knowledge Portal and to support the development of a clearinghouse of imagery sources in support of advisory services and emergency response
- Assist in the technical preparation of Advisory Missions of UN-SPIDER and in the preparation of training programmes on the use of remote sensing and geographic information systems for disaster management and emergency response
- Deliver a final presentation at UNOOSA on the internship outcomes
- Perform other tasks as necessary..

Education
Applicants for an internship must be enrolled in a full-time university degree programme (Master's or equivalent) in a graduate school (second university degree or higher), or, if applicants are pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, they must have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a graduate degree. Degree programmes should be in a field such as geography, geomatic sciences, physics, remote sensing, cartography, or other degree relevant to the activities of the UN-SPIDER Programme.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme, but are encouraged to list all relevant work experience in their application.
Applicants must have a keen demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Fluency in English, i.e. oral and written proficiency is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Special Notice
Duration: This internship position is for an initial period of three months to start between 20 January and 17 April 2014, with the option to extend to a total period of six months, based on the needs of the office and the availability of the intern.
This internship is unpaid. The intern will work five days per week (40 hours).
