WATER RESOURCES EXPERT

The person and the job:
The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is looking for a Water Resources Expert to undertake research on irrigation systems, and management of groundwater and surface water resources, in general, as a member of multi-disciplinary teams, and to also provide support to the development of related proposals. The position holder will report to the Head, Sri Lanka Development Initiative.
Location: Colombo, Sri Lanka (IWMI headquarters).
You will:
• design and implement studies on water resources development and management with an emphasis on groundwater and related sectors, in collaboration with senior researchers of IWMI;
• provide expertise in surface water and groundwater assessment, conjunctive use, modeling, and other tools to ongoing and new research projects at IWMI’s global research division and regional offices;
• prepare research reports, journal articles, and other scientific manuscripts and presentations to disseminate research results;
• contribute to workshops, policy roundtables and other capacity building activities;
• provide academic guidance to research students, interns and also supervise the work of research support staff; and
• contribute to IWMI’s fund-raising efforts by providing intellectual inputs to the preparation of proposals, and through direct donor contact.
You will possess:
• professional training and a PhD (or equivalent) in water resources management/hydrology;
• three to five years of professional/postdoctoral experience in the above-mentioned areas, with strong research experience from the region;
• experience in hydrogeology and groundwater modeling, which will be an advantage;
• a track record of publications in relevant international peer-reviewed journals;
• good field and laboratory experience;
• excellent and effective oral and written communication skills in English, in addition to any national language;
• the ability to work harmoniously in interdisciplinary and multicultural teams;
• strong team-working and interpersonal skills;
• sound qualitative and quantitative analytical skills;
• the ability to establish priorities, and plan, organize and monitor own work; and
• commitment, reliability and efficiency, with good organizational and time management skills.
This is a regionally recruited position with a competitive tax-free* salary and benefits package, which includes a housing allowance, transport, education, shipping assistance, annual home leave, retirement and health insurance package. IWMI’s policy is to appoint staff initially on three-year contracts which are subject to renewal, depending on performance and the Institute’s needs.
