Narrative Description
Reporting to the General Counsel, the incumbent will serve as Divisional Counsel to MER and advises on the full range of MER issues.
Responsibilities
- Furnishes administrative support to IATA Legal Committee;
- Retains and supervises external counsel in connection with relevant matters;
- Engages in lobbying activities before national authorities and international organizations on matters of concern to IATA's membership;
- Advises MER on international treaties;
- Represents IATA in international fora where treaties and other international legal instruments are being formulated;
- Oversees litigation involving the rights and obligations of airlines under international law;
- Represents IATA at industry legal conferences;
- Supervises junior lawyers in Legal Services in their provision of support for the foregoing activities.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bar membership for not less than 8 years;
- Recognized as highly accomplished in earlier legal positions, ideally in connection with public international law matters and ideally related to air transport;
- Highly motivated self-starter capable of working with minimal supervision;
- Capable of exercising mature judgment in formulating and executing strategy;
- Experienced and articulate advocate before regulatory and legislative bodies with a well-developed and highly effective style of engaging public authorities;
- Comfortable and effective in working with counterparts of many different cultures and nationalities;
- Familiarity with international institutions that regulate or otherwise affect the conduct of international air transportation;
- Willingness to travel frequently in keeping with the needs of the office;
- Capable of engendering confidence among senior lawyers at IATA member airlines;
- Willingness to share responsibilities with colleagues when required by workload;
- Willingness to assist colleagues in need;
- Capable of serving as an effective mentor to junior lawyers in office.
