Role overview
This placement is based in Tanzania at St. Joseph Hospital, Kagondo. The volunteer will be the contact person for all orthopedic care at the Kagondo hospital. Working closely with the Orthopedic surgeon, the volunteer will train the doctors and nurses on management of bones, wounds and prosthetics etc. Planning specialized after surgery care, coordinating follow up medical support and meeting with patients after surgery to answer questions and monitor recovery, manage record keeping, patient charts and all required surgical and hospital records as needed, plus assist orthopedic surgeons in the operating room. |
Skills, qualifications and experience required
You have a degree or diploma in orthopedic technology or surgery, 2-3 years of experience in managing orthopedic issues and strong clinical knowledge and diagnostic skills. You are able to acquire new clinical skills by self-directed learning. Over and above this, you should be able to perform clinical audits and implement changes in a collaborative and non-challenging manner; have knowledge and skills in training medical staff. You should also have a flexible personality, adapting easily to new situations, and being able to set realistic expectations on working in a hospital in the tropics. |
