Victim Support Service
Work at the frontline of women and children’s rights by supporting lawyers at a Timorese NGO to improve their technical legal skills and case management systems. Your mentoring role will assist the organisation to provide a greater range of services to victims of gender-based violence.
Background information
The Victim Support Service (VSS) provides legal advice and supports women and children victims of violence to access the formal justice systems across all 13 districts of Timor-Leste.
While VSS is currently a unit within the Judicial System Monitoring Programme, it will become an independent NGO in early 2013. Evaluations of VSS’ casework have identified a number of key areas for capacity development
An AVID volunteer has been requested to work closely with VSS lawyers as a mentor, working to improve the technical legal skills and case management systems within the organisation. The volunteer will provide support with legal analysis, maintaining client files, preparing detailed case histories, gathering evidence and client-interview skills.
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- Experience working in women or children’s rights, gender-based violence or sexual assault
- Experience working in legal aid, criminal law, family law or community legal sector
- Bachelor degree in law
- Self awareness, cultural sensitivity, flexibility and adaptability, resilience
To be eligible, applicants must be 18 years and over, Australian citizens or permanent residents, or New Zealand citizens with Special Category Visas.
