You will be supporting the staff of Wete Hospital in improving their surgical care and in ensuring the quality of the clinical treatment. Currently the Wete District Medical Team is organising to build a new operating theatre in the hospital, and seeking for an experienced surgeon to support the staff.
What does the role involve?
As a surgeon, your job will include:
- Providing surgical services in the surgical ward and the under-five clinics
- Conducting on-the-job training to staff (doctors, clinical officers, nurses, interns) on the management of surgical interventions and surgical patient care
- Assisting in developing surgical protocols and procedures
- Working together with and providing consultancy for other departments in the hospital
- Participating in the coordination of inter-departmental meetings and case reviews
Skills, qualifications and experience required
You’ll need to be qualified as a surgeon with at least 2 years working experience, including in conducting on the job training for staff and medical students. This role requires someone with patience, tolerance, and resilience in order to build mutual understanding with colleagues, as well as flexibility to create practical solutions and to handle conflicts in a constructive ways. You need to have an excellent management skill and good interpersonal skill. Some experience of working in Africa will be an advantage.

Wete Hospital is located in Wete District, on the northern part of Pemba Island which is part of Zanzibar archipelago. Pemba is a Moslem community. Wete is the second most important urban centre of Pemba Island and it is 30 km away from Chake-Chake (where there is access to the airport).
We’ll ask you to commit 12 to 24 months to make a sustainable contribution to development goals and in return we’ll provide you with invaluable training before your placement, a local living allowance, return flights, accommodation and insurance. When you return to your home country we’ll help you resettle and we’ll invite you to stay involved with us.
