Summary | The objective of SFCG in Zanzibar is to support the Government of National Unity through leadership development, building skills for good governance, expanding capacities within the media, and other methodologies. Through trainings, radio productions using different formats, coaching and partnership building, SFCG’s aim is build the capacities of journalists and to support them to produce responsible programming on governance issues that contribute to social change. Under the supervision of the Zanzibar Programme Director, the Media Coordinator is responsible for overseeing all joint SFCG radio productions with radio partners, training journalists, monitoring and reporting the progress and results, identifying new opportunities for collaboration, and providing continuous support in production. The post is 12 months in duration and is based in Zanzibar. |
Responsibilities | Ensure the implementation of all SFCG media activities to the highest possible standards and according to the work plan and budget Oversee SFCG joint production of radio programs and other media deliverables Organize and provide trainings to radio partners accordingly to the work plan Provide technical assistance to radio partners in using different tools Ensure the spirit of partnership as embodied in the partnership protocols is in place Support partner radio stations to produce programming based on the Common Ground approach Provide coaching, advice and training to journalists so they can take full responsibility and ownership of the production Conduct regular follow up on productions to ensure that the radio partners are implementing the planned production and that the content is balanced and accurate Encourage a network of journalists to mobilize around an agreed goal Organize and participate in different meetings on behalf of SFCG; support and assist the radio partners to achieve the objectives Elaborate the MOU of radio programs and follow up broadcasting for SFCG radio programming Provide budgets for any media-related activities to SFCG Program director and finance officer Identify potential partners, areas of collaboration and new initiatives for SFCG in Zanzibar in accordance with SFCG’s organizational strategy Support the radio partner to initiate listening club and critical analysis from the audience of the radio program Develop and submit monthly narrative and financial reports Periodically evaluate the results of the media work Participate in program evaluation activities if necessary As job descriptions cannot be exhaustive, the position-holder may be required to undertake other duties that are broadly in line with the above key responsibilities. |
Minimum Qualifications | Essential: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in journalism, communication, media or related fields At least 5 (five) years experience as a radio producer and journalist At least 2 (two) years experience in the field of media development, media for peacebuilding or communication for social change, preferably in a developing country Proficiency in written and spoken Swahili and English Significant experience conducting training in journalism and radio in Swahili and in English Experience in radio partnership development Experience in radio program design & production Ability to build relationship with local journalists and make a real commitment to their development Working knowledge of audience research methodologies Excellent communication, facilitation and negotiation skills A good comprehension of the principles of conflict transformation and the role of media in peacebuilding An understanding of the mission and work of SFCG Well organized, dynamic and creative A strong capacity to motivate oneself and others and to pursue new opportunities and initiatives Ability to work under pressure and in challenging environments Flexible and adaptable to changing circumstances Desirable: Radio production skills Experience working in a conflict setting Experience working in a non-profit or similar environment A knowledge of the Tanzania media environment, particularly Zanzibar |
