General Background.
At Muhimbili National Hospital, at the Paediatric Unit, there is a dedicated Children’s Cancer ward. The ward has around 60 inpatients and approximately 15 staff. Treatment of children with cancer is completely free once they are at the ward. The ward treats in the region of 350 new children each year. It has been identified that a position at the ward is needed to coordinate the admission of new patients and to coordinate some of the nursing services.
Main Purpose of the Role
To provide on-going support to the Head of Paediatric Oncology for the coordination of patient related non-clinical services at the Paediatric Oncology ward at Muhimbili National Hospital and personally assist the Head of Paediatric Oncology.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Nursing Activities
- To help ensure nursing duties linked with drug procurement are performed
- To do regular clinical skills nurse education
- Liaising between nurses, doctors and MSW to address any important issues that need to be discussed, or share information as appropriate.
- Patient Liaison
- Seeing and assessing all newly admitted children/ParentsExplaining diagnosis, treatment and possible outcomes.
- Educate them on ‘what is cancer’ and helping to teach parents necessary skills to look after child with cancer.
- Explaining daily life on the ward – tests, food, school etc.
- Identifying family related problems early and informing doctors, nurses and MSW as appropriate.
- Coordinate with the Hospital Medical Social Worker (MSW)for transportation of parents and children home
- Coordinate with the MSW for hospital exemptions if required
- Coordinate the transition of children between the ward and the hostel (once the hostel is operational)
- Liaising with ward administrator to ensure all files are regularly updated to the database.
- Meet weekly with the teachers to discuss any issues raised.
- Meet weekly with Dr Jane Kaijage to discuss any palliative care issues.
Reporting
This role reports directly to the Head of Paediatric Oncology
Person Specification:
Essential Requirements:
- Senior nurse or social worker who has minimum 3 years experience in managing children with cancer.
- Strong communication skills, with excellent written and spoken English and Swahili
- Experience of establishing strong working relationships with colleagues from different functions and cultures
- The ability to work in a busy and stressful environment.
- Experience of a flexible approach to managing and prioritising a high workload and multiple tasks
- Experience of proactively identifying and addressing issues
Terms & Conditions.
- This position is a 2 year contract with a 3-month probationary period
- Typical working hours are 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday
