The American Refugee Committee (ARC) is searching to fill the position ofEnvironment Protection Coordinator to provide assistance to the refugee population of Kigeme in Nyamagabe district. This position will be under the supervision of the Kigeme Camp Manager. The successful candidate will be supervising all planned activities related to the protection of the environment in the camp including site terracing and drainage, waste management and all other prevention activities to mitigate environmental risks and protect the refugee population from these risks. The candidate may also be required to provide support in environment protection in other refugee camps in the country.
Key responsibilities:
· Ensure the protection of the refugees, the host communities and the camp infrastructures against potential environmental hazards, such as rain, land slide, soil erosion, waste disposal, soil and agriculture contamination etc.
· Help develop and implement infrastructural work to prevent environmental hazards and insure public and environmental safety;
· Collaborate with relevant stakeholders in the camp including district environmental protection units on land management, soil conservation, tree planting and drainage system management within the camp;
· Work in collaboration with local authorities, WASH sector personnel, construction team and all other stakeholders to improve infrastructures and security in the camp;
· Ensure that key public health and security risks are identified in assessments and dealt with efficiently and appropriately;
· Ensure that refugees have access to resources or facilities needed to achieve best practices in protecting the environmental.
· Ensure that promotion activities address key behaviors of importance for public health and that they target priority groups
· Ensure that environmental protection messages are understood and accepted by intended population.
· Coordinate the management of garbage pits and sanitation areas by ARC staff and develop ecological solutions to future waste disposal;
· Coordinate the distribution of firewood and help develop and implement future technological solutions to improve cooking practices and better protection of the environment;
· Participate in the sensitisation of the refugees in keeping the camp clean;
· Train ARC staff and refugee representatives on land terracing, landslide issues, erosion prevention, urban development, etc
· Any other tasks as may be directed by supervisor;
Qualifications
· University Degree in Civil engineering or a related field;
· Minimum of 5 years of working experience;
· Previous experience in site planning, drainage systems design, terracing, landslide issues, erosion prevention, urban/rural development, and/or waste management highly desirable;
· Previous experience in capacity building and training desirable;
· Previous experience supervising personnel and coordinating projects;
· Fluent in both English and French;
· Computer literate;
· Willingness to live and work in an isolated rural area of Rwanda;
· Willingness to work to improve the life conditions of the refugees;
· Experience in such field as community development, behavioral change communication, WASH and/or shelter construction would be an advantage.
