What does the role involve?
You will be working out of the Central University Hospital of Kigali to:
Support trained staff to carry out hearing checks, including on the job training, observation, testing and giving advice.
Advise and work on complex cases.
Set up referral systems from schools for hearing tests.
Work in schools and health centres to support the learning of students
Support the schools and centres working with people who are deaf by delivering training.
Provide technical advice, support and capacity build centres across the country as they develop systems for running hearing test centres across the country and working within the community.
What skills, experience and personal qualities are needed for the role?
You will have a degree in audiology and at least 2 years experience working as an audiologist. You will also have experience of training on the job and supervising trained staff. Ideally you will have paediatric experience and have experience working in a developing country. French language skills are desirable. You’ll be a patient and flexible person who is able to work independently and motivate others. You will be sensitive and sympathetic to the needs of people with disabilities. You need to have excellent communication skills and the ability to work with a wide range of people.

You’ll be based in Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda. There is a large community of VSO volunteers based in Rwanda who meet regularly. We’ll ask you to commit to 12-24 months to make a long-term contribution tackling poverty. In return we’ll provide you with invaluable training before your placement, a local living allowance, return flights, accommodation and insurance. When you return to your home country, we’ll help you resettle and we’ll invite you to stay involved with us through campaigning, development awareness and fundraising.
