2015 Commonwealth Medical Fellowships for Tanzanians

UK Department for International Development (DFID) is inviting applications for Medical fellowships available for doctors and dentists from Developing Commonwealth Countries. These fellowships are for mid-career clinical staff to learn a new medical or dental skill, to practise the new medical or dental skill and to network with others in the same and related specialties. Awards are tenable for between three months and six months at any approved UK University Hospital; experience suggests that a minimum of 4 months is sensible. The EAS will close to all applicants on 3 December 2014.

Eligibility: To apply for a Commonwealth Medical Fellowship, candidates should:
-Be Commonwealth citizens, refugees, or British protected persons
-Be permanently resident in a developing Commonwealth country
-Be employed by a hospital affiliated to a university which is eligible to nominate candidates to the Commission
-Be available to commence their Medical Fellowship in the United Kingdom on 1 October 2015
-Have qualified as either a doctor or dentist between 1 October 2005 and 30 September 2008, or before 1 October 2000
- Met the English language requirements of the General Medical Council (GMC) or General Dental Council (GDC) by 6 March 2015.

Scholarship Open for International Students: Citizens of developing Commonwealth country (Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Botswana, Cameroon, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Falkland Islands, Gambia, Ghana, Gibraltar, Grenada, Guyana, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Malawi, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Montserrat, Mozambique, Namibia, Nauru, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Rwanda, St Helena, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and The Grenadines, Samoa, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Swaziland, Tanzania, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, Tuvalu, Uganda, Vanuatu, Virgin Islands (British) and Zambia) can apply for these Commonwealth Medical Fellowships.
Scholarship Description: Commonwealth Medical Fellowships are offered to doctors and dentists from developing Commonwealth countries to enable them to spend between three and six months at a UK hospital undertaking a programme designed to enhance their clinical skills. These fellowships are funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID). The primary aims of the Enhancing Clinical Skills Awards are for the award holder to learn a new clinical skill, to practise the new clinical skill, and to network with others in the same and related specialties. The secondary aims are for the award holder to participate in the academic activities of the host organisation, and to conduct small-scale research projects.

What does it cover? Each Commonwealth Medical Fellowship provides:
-Approved airfare to the United Kingdom and return on expiry of the Medical Fellowship (the cost of journeys made before final award confirmation will not normally be reimbursed, nor can fares be paid for a Medical Fellow’s dependants)
-A research support grant
-A personal maintenance allowance at the rate of £1,563 per month (£1,938 per month for those studying at institutions in the London Metropolitan area) – rates quoted at 2014-2015 levels
-Reimbursement of the fee for a single English language test and of the fee for GMC/GDC registration
-An initial arrival allowance
-A grant for expenses for approved travel within the United Kingdom or overseas
-Candidates should note that there is no spouse or child allowance available. A Medical Fellow who is widowed, divorced or a lone parent and is accompanied by children for whom she/he is solely legally responsible will receive an allowance in respect of the first accompanying child and child allowances for the second and third accompanying children. The level of financial support given towards the costs of family maintenance in the UK is under review and is subject to change in terms of both eligibility and rate availability.

-Academic merit of the candidate
-Quality of the application
-Likely impact of the work on the development of the candidate’s home country

How to Apply: All applications must be made through a nominating university in your home country. A full list of bodies invited to nominate can be found on the CSC website. Those wishing to be considered for inclusion in the list of institutions invited should contact the Executive Secretary of the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission. You must check with them in the first instance for specific advice on how to make an application and for their own closing date. All Commonwealth Medical Fellowship candidates must submit their application form using Electronic Application System (EAS).
Scholarship Application Deadline: The EAS will close to all applicants on 3 December 2014 and no further applications can be submitted after that date.
