An excellent opportunity has arisen for the right, bright, interested professional. FRI seeks an experienced and dynamic Android App developer in an exciting opportunity. Do you want to use your skills over a fourmonth stay in the pulsing heart of East Africa? Can you help us strengthen and innovate our services for radio broadcasters by building a comprehensive Android App to work in conjunction with Barza.fm, our social network?
The four month position will be based at Farm Radio's regional office in Arusha, Tanzania (see map: http://bit.ly/friarusha). There will be opportunities to travel within Tanzania and other countries in the Great Lakes region, where you will meet and work with radio stations, broadcasters, farmers, rural communities and technology partners.
The Android App Developer position is semivolunteer all expenses, including return airfare to Tanzania, visas, health insurance, internal travel, food and accommodation will be covered by FRI. Volunteer Android App Developer
Qualifications: Our ideal Android App Developer is a master of all things Android (our radio stations use android tablets and phones, no iOS out here). The person will love working within the vast Android open source ecosystem and leveraging all the amazing APIs that are available. Our organization's heavy usage of google services including Drive, Gmail and Hangouts as well as our plans to use Soundcloud to the max, will be music to your ears. Our ideal person knows how to take existing content from news sources and social networks like www.barza.fm and suggest exciting ways that a native Android App could take these services to the next level for our broadcaster partners sitting in their studios as well as out in the fields with farmers. He / she will flourish working alongside our other volunteers: Online community Developer and SMS + Voice Developer to integrate into a pusling voltron like powerhouse!
- Three years experience developing Android Applications
- Good knowledge of the Android open source ecosystem
- Advanced understanding of Java fundamentals (JNI?)
- Know how to program and design without 'jank'
- Confidently work with many versions of Android from 2.3 up to 4.3
- Experience with publishing Android Apps on completion
- Project management experience
- Knowledge of CSS, JSON, jQuery, HTML5 and other web languages/protocols.
- Speaks and writes English fluently (proficiency or fluency in French would be a bonus!)
- Enjoys working with a cool team of like minded people to build innovative projects
Roles & Responsibilities: Barza.fm Android App for Broadcasters
- Work closely with the Online Community Developer to make Barza.fm services available natively through an Android App.
- Create innovative ways in which an Android app could serve the information needs of broadcasters who are hosting/producing Farmers programs on the radio
- Market prices
- Weather information
- Work closely with the SMS & Voice Developer to find ways that an Android App can be a way to send and receive voice information from various sources, including messages for and from farmers
- Advise on use of existing innovative Android apps and accessible services
- Explore possibility of using an Android App with Barza as a Learning Management System for offering training modules
- Be a mentor to a junior developer who may work alongside and learn from you
- Other responsibilities as they arise.
