Job Description
Off.Grid:Electric (www.offgrid-electric.com) is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Technical Service Manager to support our rapid expansion throughout Northern Tanzania. This individual will initially report directly to the General Manager. The Technical Service Manager reports to the Operations department. The manager will be responsible for managing the national service center workshop, supporting regional service workshops, and managing a team of technicians and trainers who will support operations.
This position requires strong organizational and leadership skills, time management and coordination with other departments. Highly preferred but not essential is a working knowledge and experience in power electronics and/or solar energy systems. Position also requires a positive attitude, a high degree of personal integrity and ability to build a cohesive, positive and motivated team of technical staff under minimal supervision.
This position offers a unique opportunity to work with an international organization dedicated to bringing bright, modern light and energy services to Africa . This position will be located in Arusha and requires domestic travel. Some regional travel may also be necessary. East African citizens will be prioritized.
Key Responsibilities
- Position will report to General Manager, but will work closely with engineering teams to develop and implement standardized procedures and systems in the service workshop, and field technical activities.
- Manage the National Service Center workshop. Responsible for implementing standard work instructions, inventory management systems and workshop SOP’s. Drive continuous improvement and efficiency.
- Manage workshop inventory flow, and inventory database.
- Train regional workshop technicians on workshop SOP’s, system installation practices and other skills. Support regional workshops with ongoing training and feedback.
- Produce planning and activity reports for supervisors.
- Support Agent Success department by providing technical and installation training to Auditors and Field Trainers. Work closely with other department managers to schedule and plan training and field activities.
- Implement PPE and safety procedures, and drive a culture of safety.
- Be responsible for hiring, training, promoting and disciplining service workshop and field technician/trainers. This includes any administrative reports and documentation.
- Organize employee schedules, transportation, safety and coordinate with operations staff to organize field activities.
- Assist engineering department in developing and improving SOP’s and work instructions.
- Meet financial objectives by managing internal departmental budget, scheduling expenditures, manage tool and equipment inventories for technical work.
- Other duties as assigned.
Desired Skills and Experience
Required Skills & Experience
- Bachelors degree or equivalent level of technical education.
- Four (4) years minimum work experience, in roles of increasing responsibility including; team leadership and development, tracking budget expenses, self-development and demonstrated performance management.
- Experience in manufacturing or production, implementing standard procedures and managing inventory flow.
- Experience hiring and managing teams in Africa.
- Outstanding written and verbal communications skills (English and Kiswahili).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, internet functions and Google Apps.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to implement and assist development of SOP’s.
Highly Desired Skills
- Engineering degree, preferably in electrical or industrial engineering.
- Education and/or work experience in both East Africa and abroad.
- Strong solar energy experience.
- Experience creating and managing budgets.
- An understanding of rural East Africa and technical challenges of working in such environments.
- Ability to drive a manual vehicle.
