The Organisation Projects do not get much more exciting than our exploration and appraisal drilling campaign in East Africa. Kenya provides us with an excellent opportunity to enhance our gas and oil chain strategy in East Africa and for you; this means the chance to get involved in the initial stages of one of the region’s most exciting exploration projects – playing an active role in the development of Kenya ‘s energy sector

Position Summary To provide in-country legal support to the BG Kenya asset, during its multi well exploration campaign and a possible development of any off-shore discoveries.

Key Accountabilities provide timely and accurate local law advice to VP Upstream and Growth, Kenya and to individual business clients; work with management team and Line Manager to establish impact of local laws on BG’s operations in Kenya; make authoritative recommendations on operational matters, contract interpretation and areas that are governed by Kenyan law; manage local legal issues (such as employment laws, HSSE laws, tax issues, environmental laws, public procurement laws, local regulations, court hearings, litigation and dispute resolution); attend meetings with various government agencies, bodies, departments, ministries and national oil companies, local authorities in Nairobi and Mombasa, Labour Ministry, Immigration Department etc.); assist with contract compliance for PSCs, JOAs; assist with partner management issues and joint operations for the 2 Blocks, including assisting Commercial Manager and PCA Manager with all interactions with the Ministry of Energy; assist C&P with drafting, negotiating and finalizing contracts for drilling operations offshore Kenya; prepare due diligence reports on local suppliers in conjunction with C&P; compile quarterly corporate governance returns for the Asset; ensure awareness of and compliance with BG governance procedures; negotiate and manage office and accommodation leases; responsible for ensuring signature authorities in place (including POAs) manage branch registration and statutory compliances; responsible for advising Asset on local environmental law requirements and working with the Asset to ensure compliance; support Line Manager with Local Compliance Officer responsibility and implementation of BG Group’s Ethical Conduct Policy and Standards; provide training for the Asset on local law compliance; and assist with highlighting risks and opportunities, as well as implementation of BG’s social responsibility programme. In addition to any specific accountability for HSSE, all managers are accountable for HSSE within their area of the Business and are responsible for ensuring that their team adopt exemplary HSSE behaviours.

Unique Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Attribute     Has worked in and/or with international companies (preferably Oil and Gas and/or mining and/or law firms) and understands their drivers; Has had experience of dealing with government agencies and ministries; Has had experience of local procurement laws, local business issues and ethical conduct issues Preferably, has had experience of managing employment and tax disputes in Experience of managing, or has knowledge of, statutory compliances in Kenya; Ability to draft clear letters and contracts in English; Used to working within a team, but can work with minimal supervision; Qualified to practice law in Kenya Fluent in English and Swahili A keen interest in learning, and attention to detail Ability to identify key issues quickly, and act upon them Solution orientated and commercially minded Culturally aware Strong communication skills Ability to influence senior managers Demonstrates ability to draft and negotiate key contracts Demonstrates awareness of IOC issues Understands why proper governance is important to BG Ability to ensure the Line Manager and other relevant departments are updated on key issues as necessary and in the appropriate timeframe; and Good negotiating and presentation skills.
