The Position
Aga Khan Hospital is undertaking a project to develop its next phase that will see the development (Phase 2) of a tertiary facility including a comprehensive cardiology programme, oncology services, neurosciences, orthopaedics & trauma, diagnostic imaging, critical care, obstetrics and paediatrics. Construction expected to begin in one year.

Various aspects of the Phase 2 plans will be based on the concept of regional programmes operating on two sites (i.e. AKH-Dar and AKUH-N), and thus will be closely aligned with the recently developed Heart and Cancer Centre of the Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi. One of the first regional programmes to be established will be the Cardiac Programme.

The Interventional Cardiologist will work with the Phase 2 project team and other senior colleagues to support the cardiac programme at AKH-Dar with the aim to ensure the delivery of quality service to cardiology patients. S/he will participate in the development of evidence based protocols for cardiac care as part of the AKH-Dar Cardiac Steering Committee and in the implementation of a 'patient centered', Comprehensive Cardiac Programme. S/he should be prepared to take on the role of coordinating this programme and supporting patient through care at both sites as required.

Responsibilities

Perform tests and procedures, as required, to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac disease.

Perform appropriate and accurate invasive evidence-based diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac procedures safely.

Demonstrate knowledge and competency in use of procedure medications including emergency drugs, moderate sedatives and reversal agents.

Demonstrate knowledge and practice of patient rights, communicating effectively to patients and families about diagnosis and treatment procedures.

Demonstrate knowledge and practice of infection control practices.

Responsibility of supporting, planning and organizing the formation of an efficient and effective cardiac service through close collaboration and coordination with relevant stakeholders.

Execute plans, both short and long term to ensure the growth and expansion of the Programme.

Act as a role model for faculty and staff of the Programme.

As part of the AKH-Dar Cardiac Steering Committee, develop policies, procedures, rules and regulations of the Programme.

Support education programmes and ensure mechanisms for teaching are implemented.

Organize and implement a quality assurance programme for the programme.

The Requirements
The ideal candidate will have the following profile:

Masters in Medicine, with qualification such as M.D, M.S, M.Med, or equivalent in relevant field.

Specialization in interventional cardiology with active clinical role and ongoing academic engagement within the hospital set-up.

At least 5-6 years of clinical and academic experience post successful completion of the masters/residency program (including medical/board clearance through relevant exam).

Teaching experience in a recognized Medical College or Teaching hospital is required.
