The Center seeks a Project Manager to manage a multi-partner and multi-country project funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR, www.aciar.gov.au). The project aims to enhance youth employment and incomes by building capacity for profitable self-employment in market oriented vegetable production and to simultaneously contribute to reducing malnutrition through diet diversification with vegetables. The project will improve vegetable variety and seed supply systems, enhance crop management practices and develop value chain effectiveness across several countries with multiple partners in Eastern and Southern Africa. The position will be based at AVRDC's Regional Center for Africa in Arusha, Tanzania with frequent travel in the region (Eastern and Southern Africa). The position will report to AVRDC's Regional Director for Africa.
The Job:
The Project Manager is responsible for the management of the project through planning, implementation and technical expertise, monitoring of progress and ensuring proper evaluation of outputs, outcomes and impacts, financial accountability and technical reporting. The Project Manager will work very closely with the project partners from several different countries, the Center's scientists and support staff, the donor and other affiliated organizations. The Project Manager will foster a collaborative, supportive and well - coordinated project team across several partner organizations and countries. S/he will ensure effective communication within the project as well with relevant external parties. S/he must be able to ensure high-quality science and research delivery and promote gender equity within the project as well as in its outcomes and impacts. Within the framework of the project's scaling-out and outcome dissemination, the Project Manager will promote sharing of experiences and best practices among the target countries, and identify and pursue funding opportunities to strengthen the impact of the project and the donor's investment.
The Person:
Applicants must have a M.Sc. or Ph.D. in preferably social science, or related science, with a thorough background in food (nutrition) and agriculture and a minimum of five years of solid project management experience with demonstrated capacity to lead in an international, multidisciplinary, project-based environment. Expertise in gender issues in agriculture is highly desirable . Work experience in Eastern and Southern Africa and prior professional experience interacting with national government departments and non-governmental organizations are distinct advantages. The candidate must be willing to travel regularly in the region. Proficiency in written and verbal English is required, as is the ability to communicate complex subjects succinctly.
The Reward:
This is an Internationally Recruited Staff (IRS) position with competitive pay and benefits. This is a fixed-term appointment for four years, subject to funding availability and performance of the incumbent. The position will be available on or before 1 August 2013.
