Position Summary
The Technical Advisor, WASH will be responsible for technical leadership in water access, supply, storage, and management.
The core objective of the two-year WASH program is to assist the Kenyan government and drought-prone communities to increase resilience to drought and flash floods while increasing access to improved water supply and sanitation services, and improving hygiene for poor and vulnerable populations in the arid counties of Turkana, Marsabit (including Moyale District), Garissa, Isiolo, and Wajir in Kenya.
Position Summary
The Technical Advisor, WASH will be responsible for technical leadership in water access, supply, storage, and management.
S/he will ensure timely and efficient delivery of project’s technical results.
S/he will be responsible for assisting the COP and other team members in coordinating partners, project planning and review, stakeholder engagement, financial and people management, and donor reporting.
The Technical Advisor, WASH is responsible for supporting an experienced team focusing on these key objectives:
- Increase water storage capacity in arid lands, through improving natural and artificial storage.
- Improve WASH conditions at health facilities and nutrition centers frequently utilized during emergency response.
- Improve access to safe drinking water sources, improve access to and usage of point of use water treatment products, promote good hygiene behaviours and use of sanitation facilities as a means of reducing diarrheal disease in areas with recurrent emergency levels of malnutrition and around areas of improved water storage.
Specific Roles And Responsiblities
- Provide overall technical advice and oversight for water storage, water conduits, drains, latrines and other physical infrastructure within the consortium of project partners;
- Ensure that project water and sanitation components meet client and stakeholder expectations, environmental guidelines and specifications for sustainability and durability;
- Contribute to planning and implementation of activities including mapping and coordination, identification and improvement of strategic water sources, sustainable service access, hygiene promotion, livelihoods, and mainstreaming gender ;
- Work closely with the USAID, Government of Kenya, and other critical counterparts, to ensure the project effectively complies with the USAID and GOK objectives, rules and regulations;
- Support the timely preparation of annual work plans and reports to the donor;
- Supervise the technical work of the field project managers;
- Support the documentation and dissemination of project achievements and lessons on a timely basis;
Skills And Qualifications
The successful candidate may have “not-for-profit” experience, or development partner experience, or both. The ideal candidate will have experience in developing and implementing WASH projects, and with working with like-minded teams and organizations.
They must demonstrate achievements in their field, be service-minded and embrace principles of community-led and -driven development.
- Minimum of 10 years work experience in WASH engineering. Previous experience working in Kenya and/or East Africa strongly preferred;
- Demonstrated success in implementing programs aimed at increasing access to water and sanitation services, and/or small-scale wastewater treatment;
- Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in emergency and sustainable water and sanitation services from source to tap;
- A civil engineering degree with specialization in WASH or in the environmental sciences.
