Kenya Wildlife Service Jobs August 2012

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) is a State Corporation whose responsibility is to manage and conserve wildlife in Kenya.

The Service seeks to recruit dynamic, innovative and experienced individuals to fill the following positions at the Headquarters and Training Institute in Naivasha.
1. Risk Manager

JG “4”

(One (1) Vacancy)
Reporting to the Head Internal Audit and Risk, the overall responsibility will be to develop and maintain a risk management strategy for the Service.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement systems, policies and procedures for identification, collection and analysis of risk related information.
  • Develop and maintain a risk management strategy for the Service.
  • Evaluate adequacy and effectiveness of controls and methodology established by management to ensure that identified risks are appropriately mitigated at both strategic and operational level.
  • Participate in the formulation and review of risk management and control activities for the Service to ensure they meet the set objectives and are worthwhile investments.
  • Understand the environmental risk management systems and controls in conservation and put in place controls to monitor the full implementation of these systems with a focus on risk aggregation.
  • Develop a model for assessing risk and templates to be used by technical staff to assess the level of risk.
  • Review new and on-going management plans to ensure that they are carried out only after a comprehensive risk assessment is done.
  • Prepare reports for the Board Audit and Risk Committee and Senior Management in respect of ecological risk.
Job Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Economics or its equivalent from a recognized institution.
  • At least three (3) years experience in ecological risk management at management level with a reputable organization.
  • Certification in risk management will be an added advantage.
  • Good understanding of key drivers that influence and determine strategic decisions
  • Self motivated with ability to meet tight deadlines.
  • A team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a positive attitude towards work.
  • Good understanding of techniques to manage and mitigate operational risks.
  • Willing to challenge the status quo.
  • Possession of a Masters degree will be an added advantage
  • Possession of valid Certificate of Good Conduct obtained from the CID
2. Monitoring & Evaluation Manager

JG “4”

(One (1) Vacancy)
Reporting to the Deputy Director Strategy & Change, the overall responsibility will be to develop and implement a monitoring and evaluation system for the Service.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Leading in the design and implementation of a Monitoring and Evaluation System in close working relationship with the other departments
  • Developing and implementing efficient data collection systems for assessment of progress
  • Undertaking data analysis and providing regularly updated reports on the implementation status against the organizational goals and objectives (e.g. quarterly, annual, management, board reports)
  • Developing and implementing a central M&E data management system (including identification, implementation and oversight of necessary IT support/tools)
  • Support effective engagement of staff in M&E by providing technical support in developing and monitoring progress towards programmatic indicators
  • Developing the framework for evaluation of projects/programs/ activities and ensuring that they are aligned to the organizations strategic goals
  • Ensuring good internal communication of the progress and impact of Service’s M&E system
  • Providing technical input into other Service programs where M&E expertise is of relevance.
Job Requirements
  • Bachelors degree from a recognized institution
  • Five (5) years direct experience in designing and/or implementing organizational level systems for M&E and/or adaptive management learning
  • Direct experience of applying M&E and/or organizational learning to address sustainability issues (e.g. environment, social development, good governance, economic resilience)
  • Experience in designing and/or implementing data collection and data management systems
  • Experience in engaging and supporting others to contribute to M&E work
  • Experience in data analysis, evaluation and program cycle management
  • Experience in translating data into accessible reports for diverse audiences
  • Knowledge of one or more sustainability standards process and balanced Score Card will be an added advantage
  • Good understanding of ISO and government performance contracting requirements will be an added advantage
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and report writing skills
  • Computer skills in statistical analysis tools such as SPSS, MS Access, STATA and Microsoft Office suite to support M&E management
  • Possession of Masters degree will be an added advantage
  • Possession of valid Certificate of Good Conduct obtained from the CID
3. Physical Planner

JG “4”

(One (1) Vacancy)
Reporting to the Head Lands Management, the overall responsibility will be to initiate and supervise preparation of Part Development Plans of all KWS-managed properties and other land reserved for wildlife conservation as may be required; to liaise with government departments, county governments and communities during preparation of regional physical plans; and to prepare site plans for all physical developments by KWS.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Initiate preparation of Part Development Plans for unplanned lands.
  • Follow up of PDP’s and liaison with relevant institutions to ensure approval.
  • Liaison with Government Departments, County governments and communities on matters relating to planning.
  • Representation of KWS interests during the preparation of regional Plans.
  • Site Planning for KWS properties.
  • Development of Policy on Physical Planning for KWS facilities.
  • Preparation of annual work plans.
  • Preparation of timely and accurate reports.
  • Provide technical input on planning liaison matters.
  • Performing any other duties that may be assigned from time to time.
Job Requirements
  • Bachelor of Arts degree in Urban and Regional Planning or its equivalent from a recognized institution
  • Member of Kenya Institute of Planners
  • At least five (5) years work experience in urban and regional planning
  • IT Skills
  • Possession of a Masters degree will be an added advantage
  • Possession of valid Certificate of Good Conduct obtained from the CID
4. Lands Liaison Officer

JG “6”

(One (1) Vacancy)
Reporting to the Senior Lands Officer, the overall responsibility will be to pursue matters relating to KWS lands at the Ministry of Lands and other government institutions.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct due diligence on land proposed for purchase, lease or easement.
  • Follow up approval process for Part Development Plans and issuance of Letters of Allotment.
  • Follow up on approval of Deed Plans.
  • Follow up on preparation of title documents for public land reserved for wildlife conservation.
  • Liaison on matters relating to land reserved for wildlife conservation with the Ministry of Lands and other government departments.
  • Performing other duties as may be assigned from time to time.
Job Requirements
  • Bachelors degree in Land Economics with three (3) years working experience or Diploma in Real Estate Management or its equivalent from a recognized institution with five (5) years working experience
  • Experience in land conveyance will be an advantage
  • IT Skills
  • Possession of valid Certificate of Good Conduct obtained from the CID
5. Insurance Officer

JG “6”

(One (1) Vacancy – KWS HQS)
Reporting to the Head Insurance & Assets, the overall responsibility will be to ensure timely settlement of claims and maintain updated insurance registers.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Facilitate lodging and settlement of claims upon loss
  • Responsible for compilation of information on all insurable assets and services
  • Review and keep updated data on claims
  • Assist the insurance investigators and assessors in loss adjustments
  • Organize for motor insurance certificates
  • Advice employees on claims documentation and ensure that claims are properly documented
  • Facilitate staff training on relevant insurance related internal policies and procedures
  • Advice the insurance firms on any material changes on covered risk
  • Follow up on insurance motor repairs
  • Compile monthly reports on insurance matters
  • Reviewing of insurance management policies & procedures
  • Conduct market surveys on available insurance products.
Job Requirements
  • Bachelors of Commerce degree (Insurance Option) from a recognized institution
  • Diploma in Insurance or ACII
  • Five (5) years working experience in insurance management and administration.
  • IT Skills
  • Possession of good writing and communication skills
  • Possession of valid Certificate of Good Conduct obtained from the CID
6. Lecturer I

(Two (2) Vacancies)
Reporting to the Deputy Principal, the successful candidate will be responsible for the provision of quality teaching, research and consultancy service in order to attain the set objectives of the Institute.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teaching, conducting research and providing guidance to trainees.
  • Participating in training curriculum development and training programs
  • Participating in the preparation of the Institute’s budget and work plans
  • Coordinating local and international training programs
  • Preparing reports.
Job Requirements
  • MSc. in Tourism or Hospitality Management or its equivalent from a recognized institution.
  • At least two (2) relevant scientific publications in referred journals.
  • Three (3) years relevant experience in a similar institution
  • IT skills
  • Possession of valid Certificate of Good Conduct obtained from the CID
7. Lecturer II

Reporting to the Deputy Principal, the successful candidate will be responsible for the provision of quality teaching, research and consultancy service in order to attain the set objectives of the Institute.

  • Teaching, conducting research and providing guidance to trainees
  • Participating in training curriculum development and training programs
  • Preparing reports
Job Requirements
  • MSc in Wildlife, Natural Resource or Tourism Management or equivalent with at least one (1) scientific publication in a referred journal.
  • At least two (2) years teaching experience in a similar institution.
  • IT Skills
  • Possession of valid Certificate of Good Conduct obtained from the CID
8. Assistant Lecturer II

(Five (5) Vacancies)
Reporting to the Deputy Principal, the successful candidates will be responsible for the provision of quality teaching, research and consultancy service in order to attain the set objectives of the Institute.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teaching and participate in field training program for trainees
  • Assist in research
  • Participating in training curriculum development and training programs
  • Performing any other duties that may be assigned from time to time
Job Requirements
  • BSc. in Wildlife Conservation/Biology, Natural Resource Management,, Fisheries & Aquaculture Management, Biological or Natural Sciences, Tourism, Hospitality or Equivalent
  • At least two (2) years teaching experience in a similar institution.
  • IT Skills
  • Possession of valid Certificate of Good Conduct obtained from the CID
9. Guidance & Counseling Officer (Psychological Counseling)

(One (1) Vacancy)
Reporting to the Registrar, the position holder will responsible for guidance and counselling of programme for the Institute; both employees and students.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepare and develop counseling programmes for the Institute
  • Coordinate counseling services and develop other trainees’ wellness programmes
  • Provide direct counseling to Individual Trainees and staff
  • Undertake comprehensive trainee assessments on their psychological and social needs
  • Counsel trainees on HIV/AIDS and participate in HIV/AIDS related activities
  • Counsel trainees with drug and substance use problems and participate in substance abuse related activities
  • Provide updates/information on trainee progress report
  • Develop effective deliveries, reviews and evaluations on trainee counseling programmes
  • Consult with trainees, parents, employees and community to assist in meeting the needs of trainees
  • Participate in trainee appraisal for purpose of education placement of trainees by using appropriate educational assessment i.e. career guidance
  • Assist in teaching where applicable
Job Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychological Counseling from a recognized Institution.
  • At least three (3) years relevant experience in active counseling in a tertiary training institution.
  • Be mature (30 years and above) and experience in working with young people
  • Demonstrable ability to work well in a team.
  • Show evidence of counseling experience.
  • A member of a professional counseling Associations/bodies
  • Be a trainer in counseling
  • IT Skills
  • Interest in working with and helping students with general psychological problems.
  • Experience in working with people with substance use problems will be an added advantage.
  • Possession of valid Certificate of Good Conduct obtained from the CID
10. Senior Cook / Chef

JG ”9a” KWSTI

(Three (3) Vacancies)
Reporting to the Catering Supervisor, the overall responsibility will be to provide quality food production services.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensure proper storage of foodstuffs and beverages
  • Collaborate with the Cateress in planning of menus
  • Direct the cooks in food preparations following laid down methods and procedures
  • Supervise shifts in food requisitions, control and usage
  • Supervise cleanliness of equipment, utensils, kitchen area and its surroundings
  • Performing any other duties as may be assigned from time to time
Job Requirements
  • KCSE Certificate
  • Diploma in Food Production from a recognized Institution
  • At least five (5) years experience as a cook
  • Knowledge and skills in Institutional food production
  • Possession of valid Certificate of Good Conduct obtained from the CID
