Locally known as the Walter Reed Southern Highlands
AIDS Program, the Henry Jackson Foundation Medical Research International
(HJFMRI) is an international non-governmental organization working in several
countries conducting research studies and providing care and treatment to
people affected by HIV/AIDS. HJFMRI is funded by the Presidents Emergency
Plan for AIDS Relief PEPFAR.
In collaboration
with the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHSW), HJFMRI has been leading a
comprehensive HIV/AIDS care and treatment program in the Southern Highlands of
Tanzania since 2004 with support from the President’s Emergency Plans for AIDS
Relief (PEPFAR). The program is based Mbeya and has since extended to
more than 100 health facilities in Mbeya, Rukwa and Ruvuma regions, which
collectively represent a catchment area of about 6 million people. Mbeya
region is one of high prevalence regions in Tanzania and expansion of HIV care
and treatment programs is critical.

Position Description
POSITION TITLE: Medical Laboratory Technologist/Scientist
(8 positions)
STATUS: 2
years Fixed Term.

Referral Hospital Laboratory
POSITION SUMMARY:
The
Medical Laboratory Technologist has responsibility for
carrying out day-to-day testing services and assisting with the implementation
of the quality management system at the Mbeya Referral Hospital (MRH) General
and Specialized Laboratories. This position requires good laboratory basic knowledge
and skills in applied Molecular Biology and Virology, Clinical Chemistry,
Haematology, Flow-cytology, Serology, Microbiology and Mycobacteriology in
addition to competency in medical laboratory science practice. Eligible
candidates will be trained in specialized clinical laboratory tests offered at
MRH. As a Medical Laboratory Technologist/Scientist, you shall work as part of
a team contributing to the goals and objectives of HJFMRI/WRP and the Mbeya
Referral Hospital (MRH). This position reports to the HJFMRI/WRP Laboratory
Director.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT
LIMITED TO:
·
Work
at the Mbeya Referral Hospital Laboratory as a volunteer Laboratory
Technologist/Scientist, carrying out laboratory diagnostic and clinical
monitoring tests including diagnostic Nucleic Acid PCR assays, Genotyping and
Proteomics, Bacterial and Mycobacterial cultures, Clinical Chemistry analyses,
Haematological tests and another duties as assigned by the laboratory manager.

Follow
written Standard Operating Procedures for every aspect of pre-analytic,
analytic and post-analytic phases of the testing process in a laboratory.
·
Ensure
compliance to quality assurance standards based on recommendations from the
Section Supervisor and Quality Manager.
·
Assist
in the implementation of a quality management system for the MRH Laboratory.
·
Assist
in the preparation and delivery of proficiency testing for EQA.
·
Assist
the section head institute in the departmental audit.
·
Document
all occurrences in the occurrence log and carry out corrective and preventive
action.
·
Participate
in the organization’s staff appraisal scheme
·
Contribute
actively to departmental training programs as appropriate, and to the training
of medical technologists within the locality and nationally.
·
Contribute
to the goals and objectives of the HJFMRI/WRP and MRH.
OVERALL QUALIFICATIONS:
This position requires a
person, who is capable of working independently, fully understands and is
committed to implementing quality standards required of an ISO15189 accredited
Laboratory in accordance with directives issued by the Section Supervisor.

Qualifications:
1.
Applicant
must have the minimum qualification of an Bachelor’s Degree in Medical
Laboratory Science or, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology or its equivalent
with the following additional qualifications:
· Knowledge and skills
of working with Nucleic Acid Amplification and detection techniques (Important)
· Knowledge of DNA
sequencing methods
· Knowledge and skills
in general microbiology laboratory procedures
· Knowledge and skills
in general clinical chemistry, haematology, flow cytometry and serology
laboratory procedures
· Knowledge and practical
experience of use of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and Laboratory Quality
Standards implementation
· Excellent written and
oral communication skills in both English and Kiswahili.
· Computer Skills
including MS Word, MS Excel, MS Power Point and MS Access packages.
· Be registered or
eligible for registration with the Health Laboratory Technologists Council of
Tanzania.
