The post is located in the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT), ICTR Branch, Arusha. The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Senior Trial Attorney and the general supervision of the Officer in Charge/Senior Legal Officer.
Responsibilities
The incumbent will perform the following duties:
1. Assist in the preparation of cases for the Prosecution (including testimonial, documentary, demonstrative, and other manner of evidence and law) for presentation, on behalf of the Prosecutor, at indictment review hearings, trials and incidental motions;
2. On behalf of the Prosecutor, appear together with other trial team members before the Trial Chamber of the MICT to prosecute the cases;
3. Undertake research and analysis of law and facts and prepare written factums, submissions, motions, responses and briefs during trial;
4. Conduct evidential searches on OTP databases and maintain appropriate logs;
5. Review and analyze material for disclosure to the Defence and maintain accurate disclosure logs;
6. Review and analyze evidence being tendered by the Defence during trials;
7. Attend in-house reviews and briefings and render advice as necessary;
8. Advise investigators on supplementary investigations as necessary;
9. Undertake any other assignments as may be determined by or on behalf of the Prosecutor.
Competencies
• Professionalism: Knowledge of, and ability to apply, legal principles, concepts and procedures for review, examination, and processing of a range of legal documents. Sound knowledge of substantive and procedural international criminal law, particularly in the context of the ICTR and/or ICTY. Knowledge of various legal research sources, including electronic/online research tools, and ability to conduct research and analyze information on a wide range of legal issues. Ability to interpret and apply legal instruments, develop and present results, recommendations, and opinions clearly and concisely. Ability to draft legal documents and work under pressure. Ability to apply good legal judgment in the context of assignments given. Experience and ability to work well in a multicultural environment. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in law. First-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Postgraduate studies in criminal or international law would be an asset. The candidate must have been called to the Bar or admitted to practice law in any recognized jurisdiction.
Work Experience
At least five years of progressively responsible experience in criminal prosecution, including substantial experience at the international level. Relevant experience at the ICTR and/or ICTY is highly desirable.
Languages
Fluency in one of the working languages of the MICT, English or French (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of the other would be an asset.
Assessment Method
Evaluation of qualified applicants may include a written assessment which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
Special Notice
The appointment is limited to the Mechanism. Appointment of the successful candidate on this position will be limited to the initial funding of the post. Extension of the appointment is subject to the extension of the mandate and/or the availability of funds. As the international tribunals are not integrated in the Secretariat, UN Staff Members serve on assignment or secondment from their parent department/office if selected. Appointments of staff members in the United Nations are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General. Staff Members are expected to move periodically to new functions in accordance with established rules and procedures, and may in this context be reassigned by the Secretary-General throughout the Organization based on the changing needs and mandates.
