GREAT AFRICAN FOOD COMPANY is looking for PRODUCTION TEAM MEMBERS with knowledgeable in vegetable and fruit production, understand it starts with the soil, are concerned about the impact of chemical pesticides on public health and the environment, interested in commercial organic production, want to increase incomes for small holder farmers and be part of a company with a strong social, environmental and economic mission.
PRODUCTION TEAM MEMBERS are responsible from varietal selection through harvest, participate in crop planning, new crop development, nursery management, insect and plant disease management, irrigation planning and finding new solutions to old problems.
This position supports farmers to ensure crop plans are implemented, plant diseases and plant feeding insect populations are controlled and that farming practices achieve good flavor and quality for consumers in Africa, Middle East and Europe.
Requirements:
• University degree in Agronomy, Horticulture and Agriculture General.
• Commercial production experience is a plus.
• Understanding of biological control, soil management in organic systems and plant disease management.
• Knowledge in organic agriculture.
• Fluency in Kiswahili and English.
• Skilled at Microsoft EXCEL to plan complex planting and production programs.
• Comfortable with Outlook for email and Microsoft Word for report writing.
Production experience useful: Hard squashes, onions, potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, fine green beans, sugar snap and Chinese peas, ginger and turmeric, cabbage, sweet potatoes, avocados, berries, citrus, bananas, mangos, litchis. Interest in exploring other crops.
Responsibilities include:
• Crop plans.
• Grower coordination and support.
• Agricultural supplies for certified organic production.
• Soil fertility program to comply with organic certification requirements.
• Disease and insect management to prevent economic losses.
• Varietal selection, plant spacing, soil preparation, cultivation practices, harvest practices and post harvest practices.
Helpful knowledge and experience:
• Commercial planning and production of vegetable and fruit crops.
• Organic crop production practices and requirements as defined by European Union.
• Cover crops and plant rotations appropriate to East African soils and climates.
• Biological control practices and strategies.
• Insect and plant disease materials approved for organic crop production.
• Fruit and vegetable quality requirements for East African, European and Middle Eastern markets.
• Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and Global Gap as required by European markets.
A desire to work with small scale growers and the ability to explain complex concepts in clear terms are critical to success. Leadership skills are required to implement the use of cover crops, compost, crop rotations, biological control, harvest and post harvest practices, Global GAP and organic certification.
