The School of St Jude Teacher Mentors


The School of St Jude, Arusha, Tanzania is a charity funded school that provides FREE high quality education to approximately 1,600 primary and secondary children from the poorest communities in Arusha.
We are currently taking applications for both Primary & Secondary Teacher Mentors for 2014.
The school is committed to the training and mentoring of local teachers - with a focus on developing teaching methodologies which support student-centred, enquiry based learning within the context of the content-driven Tanzanian national curriculum.
Mentors usually work alongside a specific year team or group of subject specialist teachers, and are also expected to contribute to the whole school professional development.
You will need to be patient and tolerant as you will be living and working at the school with other volunteer staff from various cultures and with a variety of personalities.
The School of St Jude is challenging the children of Tanzania to be well educated and thus improve the future for themselves and their families. This is an opportunity to be a part of that!
Key Responsibilities:
  • Work alongside Tanzanian teachers to support them in the delivery of the national curriculum.
  • Support the Tanzanian teaching staff to prepare teaching materials and other teaching resources.
  • Provide or contribute to whole school professional development
  • Collaborate with leaders and other mentors in supporting the school's vision to be an exemplary, modern and self sustaining institution
Required Qualifications and Experience:
  • Bachelor of Education from an internationally recognized University
  • Significant teaching experience in student-centred classrooms
  • Curriculum Writing/Development experience
  • Practical experience with more than one curriculum framework
  • Management experience preferred
Skills:
  • An ability to work flexibly, with patience, reflection, independence and with a focus on continuous teacher education to promote quality student learning
  • An ability to model good practice in all aspects of teaching
  • An ability to work alongside a team of local teachers, leaders and other mentors
  • Possess the integrity, open-mindedness and adaptability necessary to live and work in a developing country
  • Strong inter-personal and communication skills
Living Allowance: International volunteers receive a monthly living allowance.
