Deputy Director, Foundation Partnerships

The Deputy Director will contribute to the cultivation, management and growth of USF’s current Foundations portfolio, reporting to the Senior Director of Foundation Partnerships. As part of the overall Foundations team effort, the Deputy Director will take a lead in helping to formulate specific partnership strategies and funding initiatives, as identifying and cultivating those partners and relationships that will serve the Foundations team’s goals and help advance the organization’s mission. 

Special focus will be on:
• Cultivating, managing and growing projects and relationships that will allow the Foundations team to flexibly respond to high-impact opportunities from one or more of the U. S. Fund’s leading U. S. private foundation partners, as well as to entrepreneurially diversify opportunities for increasing support to UNICEF across various areas of these institutions (e.g., multiple issue areas, regional initiatives).

Key Responsibilities/Outcomes (include but are not limited to):
• Develop, manage and grow own portfolio of complex, multi-year grant programs at the =$7 - $10M annual level
• Serve as the Foundations team point person on specific grant projects, funding initiatives and portfolio-related issues within that stream of work, including:
o Formulating and implementing individual plans and strategies for developing key partnerships and funding initiatives with multiple partners that include U. S. private foundations and other stakeholders, coordinating necessary internal and external resources to ensure all grant programs are effectively executed and partners’ needs are fully met.
o Drafting key Foundations and grant stewardship documents, in whole or in part, including grant proposals, reports, and presentations intended for a wide variety of purposes and audiences.
o Conducting due diligence to identify legal, procedural and financial issues for potential grants prior to proposal submission/approval, as well as over the life of multi-year grant projects.
• Contribute to the development and implementation of the Foundation team’s annual growth strategy, as overseen by the Senior Director, and be responsible for:
o Formulating and implementing a specific growth strategy for own portfolio as part of development and implementation of wider Foundations annual growth strategy.
• Oversee/guide performance of Manager and/or Officer-level direct reports (including setting/prioritizing of 6-month and annual goals), provide guidance and assistance with skills development on assigned projects and tasks, including:
o Reviewing and evaluating performance of direct reports every 6 months, give recommendations to Senior Director re staff performance/recognition as well as growth and development of staff skills and capacity.
• Contribute to the development and implementation of the team-wide ongoing workplan for Foundations, as overseen by the Senior Director, including:
o Formulating/coordinating specific workplans for own business workstream/direct reports, as part of the broader Foundations team’s ongoing workplan.
o Liaising with other USF departments and UNICEF staff to ensure successful implementation of the Foundations team’s strategy and partnership initiatives.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree required; Advanced degree in international development, international relations, global/public health, public policy/advocacy, economics or a related field preferred. 
• A minimum of 7 years’ experience in grants management and administration-related role, including management of direct reports, responsibility for annual revenue goal/major funded projects at least partially funded via private foundations and/or related institutions.
• Direct knowledge of U. S. & international grant-making rules and regulations, as well as private foundation policies, is ideal.
• In-depth knowledge of current global health/development issues as well as UN and government development agencies is strongly preferred.
• Ability to create and deliver proposals and presentations that are client-ready and reflect analytical thinking, creativity and a clear understanding of both the prospective partner’s requirements and USF’s programs and assets.
• Proven ability to prioritize, work independently, handle multiple, complex tasks simultaneously, successfully manage and build a pipeline of work, generate pragmatic solutions to address potential roadblocks as well as leverage key opportunities.
• Ability to navigate complex environments, help build relationships with a variety of different institutions and partners.
