Research Assistant, Tanzania

Contract duration: 12 months (with possible extension)

Job purpose
BBC Media Action is seeking a Research Assistant to provide support to the research department on the interventions to support public service broadcasting in the spirit of advancing good governance in Tanzania.
Main Duties
• Ensure close follow up of the local partner stations and national programme producers on the submission of weekly database reports
• Translation of the programme database content information which includes all the mobile phone messages, face book messages, and tweeter messages
• Ensure data entry of both local and national governance information into the local and National database
• Follow up on the monthly governance programmes for content analysis
• Assist in compiling and updating the mentors training database on a weekly basis
• Design of data collection tools with guidance (i.e. discussion guide, questionnaires)
• Assist in coordinating field work activities such as preparing budgets, recruitment of participants and logistics)
• Organize for transcription and translation of FGDs and IDIs transcripts and translation of data collection tools
• Conduct reviews and other desk based research
• Participate in moderating FGDs, IDIs and conducting station assessments
• Support in preparing summaries of the key findings of the studies conducted
• To ensure all project activities meet BBC standards, as well as delivering the projects development objectives.
• Perform any other duties that may be assigned.
Required skills, knowledge and experience
• A university graduate with proven experience or interest of working in the field of research
• Fluency in English and Swahili.
• Good interpersonal skills to establish effective working relationships with all staff within the Trust and key stakeholders externally.
• Able to communicate effectively at all levels within the organisation, including relevant staff working for the BBC in the UK.
• Proven research skills and the ability to operate effectively on the Country Management Team.
• Willingness and ability to take the initiative not only in identifying problems but also in suggesting and implementing solutions.
• An eye for detail and a concern for accuracy, together with the ability to keep sight of the broad picture.
