PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
Reporting to the Director of Development, the Director of Foundations will work with the development and program staff to build institutional support. He or she will be responsible for developing a comprehensive plan for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and acknowledging foundation funders. A major function of the position will be to build strategic relationships with institutional staff and stakeholders.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Manage all aspects of grant support from public and private foundations and other institutions
• Craft a long-range strategic foundation plan to grow institutional sources of support
• Develop proposal concepts with executive and program staff
• Write and/or oversee the writing and editing of grant proposals, acknowledgements, and reports
• Write and/or oversee the preparation of proposal budgets with finance and program staff
• Work with program staff to create and implement foundation communication strategy
• Facilitate and cultivate relationships between internal program staff and foundation staff
• Track all aspects of the fundraising process from identification to reporting
• Meet with existing and prospective institutional funders
• Manage and supervise grant writer
• Participate in the development management team
REQUIRED SKILLS
• Five years or more in foundation fundraising with at least two or more years of supervisory experience;
• High level grant management experience and familiarity with the human rights, civil rights or civil liberties institutional funding community;
• Demonstrated experience in long-term strategic planning and the ability to work closely with executive and program staff;
• Excellent written and oral communication skills;
• Superior organizational skills;
• Computer literacy and competence with development database software and on-line prospect research sources;
• Exceptional sense of humor.
EDUCATION requirements: Bachelors Degree or higher
