The United States Institute of Peace is an independent quasi-federal institution established and funded by the U.S. Congress to:
Prevent and resolve violent international conflict;
Promote post-conflict stability and development;
Increase peacebuilding capacity, tools, and intellectual capital.
The Institute accomplishes its mission through direct engagement in peacebuilding efforts around the world, and by empowering others with knowledge, skills, and resources.
SUMMARY
The Vice President, Academy for International Conflict Management and Peacebuilding at the United States Institute of Peace, leads and directs the Institute’s education and training arm. The candidate will lead the next phase of the Academy’s development, with the goal of making it the premier global center for training and education related to the prevention and mitigation of deadly international conflicts. This transformation will require a full review of the Academy’s curriculum, expansion of on-line and international instruction, outreach to key existing and potential constituencies, and the development and implementation of a new marketing strategy. The Vice President will also serve as a senior leader at USIP, responsible for working with experts and managers across the Institute to advance the USIP mission.
The Academy’s mission is to:
•Create and deliver education and training opportunities to improve the practice of conflict prevention, conflict management, and conflict resolution.
•Help practitioners in governments, international organizations, non-profit organizations, and the private sector to build and strengthen the skills required to manage conflict in all its phases, from prevention to post-conflict peacebuilding.
•Promote peace by working with education and training partners in fragile states and societies emerging from conflict.
The Vice President has a great deal of latitude to manage the work of the Center. He/she works under the general supervision of the Executive Vice President and has frequent interaction with the Board, the President and the other senior leaders at USIP. He/she must work in collaboration with programs and experts across the Institute.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
In his/her capacity, the appointee is expected to:
•Provide vision, intellectual leadership, and strategic organizational direction to the program, and lead, motivate and engage the staff to achieve the vision.
•Identify, design, and implement innovative programs that advance the Institute’s missions and generate tuition revenue.
•Develop and implement the Academy’s strategy for delivering high quality training and education.
•Oversee a marketing and outreach strategy that will increase the Academy’s enrollment and impact.
•Manage, and be accountable for the performance of the Academy and for achieving agreed-upon results.
•Develop and be accountable for the operating budget and oversee revenue projections.
•Hire and oversee all Academy staff; review and approve employee performance evaluations.
•Develop strong relationships and partnerships within the foreign affairs and conflict management communities (e.g., government, NGOs, international organizations, academia, and the military).
•Maintain an environment of excellence and a “can do” culture that facilitates USIP’s success.
•Conduct outreach to Congress and other key stakeholders, and help broaden the Institute’s national profile.
•Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
•Master’s degree or equivalent experience in a related field is required; Ph.D. preferred.
•Minimum of ten years of related professional experience; some experience in professional education and training preferred.
•Exceptional leadership, strategy and management skills, and the ability to guide a rapidly evolving organization in an exciting new phase.
•Strong business skills and the ability to develop a financially sustainable business model for the Academy while serving USIP’s core mission of preventing and mitigating violent deadly conflict.
•Expertise in international affairs and/or the disciplines of conflict management (e.g., conflict prevention, peacemaking, and/or post-conflict state-building) and the organizations that work in these fields.
•Strong interest in the Institute’s work, together with commitment to its mission and to achievement of its full potential as a positive force for peace in a dangerous and uncertain world.
•Ability to think strategically and develop, communicate and execute effective multi-year plans and budgets.
•Advanced leadership and interpersonal skills suited to leading extremely talented professionals, and to ensuring a cohesive and committed team.
•Strong collaboration, coordination and project management skills.
•Advanced communication skills (oral and written) and comfort with different audiences (e.g., high-level briefings, large public events, media appearances).
