Job Description and required qualifications (Important Note - Position open to All East African Nationals) Under the supervision of the Senior Protection Officer/Head of Office, the incumbent will perform the following functions: • Direct the office operations with regard to psychosocial assistance; • Oversee counseling psychologists at two field sites in Nsambya and Rubaga and ensure activities are running smoothly; • Provide counseling services and other short term therapeutic services to refugees referred to office; • Conduct Best Interest Assessments/Determinations and conduct determination of family composition interviews; • Conduct psychosocial/mental state assessments and prepare related reports; assess refugees in need of psychiatric care, refer those in need to a psychiatrist and monitor progress; • Conduct home visits to assess individual psychosocial needs; • Facilitate internal and external capacity building activities; • Ensure up to date record keeping including case preparation, keeping continuous counseling notes and daily records • Prepare periodic reports and collect, analyze and compile psychosocial services data; • Provide support to caseworkers in the tracking of individual cases, updating status, and maintaining client database etc.; • Conduct individual and group therapy sessions for children and adults; • Provide supervision for all activities to be carried out by children at the child therapy center • To attend monthly debriefing and supervision sessions • Perform other duties as required.
Education: A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in psychology, counseling psychology or its equivalent from a recognized university. Master’s degree a plus
Skills and competencies • Computer literacy a must with strong knowledge of ACCESS, EXCEL and WORD • Ideal candidate should have a keen awareness and a good knowledge of psychosocial issues and the complexities of working on these issues with a refugee population. • Excellent report writing skills and proven ability to conduct psychological assessments; • Experience in planning and implementing psychosocial project activities • Group facilitation skills and experience • At least one year of training experience • Experience in project management in an NGO setting • Diplomacy and assertiveness • Ability to confront and discuss sensitive issues with respect and confidentiality
Experience • No less than three years job experience in trauma counseling, preferably in the NGO sector. Knowledge of refugee protection and assistance a plus.
Languages Proficiency in English. Working knowledge of Swahili and/French an added advantage
