JOB SUMMARY:
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reporting to the Vice President, International Programs, the Global Director, Restricted Fundraising is responsible for the development and overall implementation of the organization¡¦s global strategy for raising restricted funding, with a focus on government and institutional sources. A member of the International Programs Team, the position will act as a critical linkage point between staff and units raising restricted funding in National Offices, the field and the International Program team. Central to this role is assuring the achievement of overall global targets for restricted funds, particularly government and institutional, not only by direct efforts, but also via a high degree of coordination, liaison and support of National Offices, the Vice-Presidents of Corporate Partnership and Philanthropy, and Regional and Country Offices. The Global Director will have a target for directly raising restricted funds from jurisdictions where we have no existing office or representation or low capacity. In order to assure that the other revenue focused units of the organization are equipped to succeed, the Global Director will have to effectively communicate the field program priorities for restricted fundraising and track overall global progress against those restricted fundraising targets. These restricted fundraising targets are fundamentally linked to the program expense budgets and are the primary enabler of this work. A key function of the role will be to build capacity across the organization to compete for and win government and institutional restricted funding opportunities and to develop a comprehensive understanding of our government and institutional funding landscape. The Global Director will also build and assure strong systems and processes for restricted grant seeking and internal collaboration, including a high degree of project and team management skills. The Global Director will lead a small coordination, and technical proposal development technical team in Toronto. The ideal candidate will be technically proficient in government and institutional grant-seeking, but will also have very good communication and collaboration skills and a broad strategic approach to expressing priorities and goals. The Global Director, Restricted Fundraising will be based in Toronto with occasional international travel. Up to 20% travel to selected areas of RTP¡¦s operations will be required.
Job Responsibility #1: LEAD ORGANIZATIONAL EFFORT TO ACHIEVE RESTRICTED FUNDRAISING TARGETS (40% of Time):
  • Determine Targets. Collaborate with various unit leaders to establish their goals and targets for restricted fundraising. Compare and contrast this with the funding need as expressed in the global revenue strategy and the program priorities. Work with appropriate leaders to revise goals and targets as necessary. Establish targets for their own unit’s efforts.
  • Assure Plans to Achieve Targets: Collaborate with National Offices, HQ fundraising offices, Regional and Country Offices and HQ leads responsible for restricted fundraising to plan for the achievements of those targets. Lead on the development of prospecting plans and lists for the HQ team.
  • Track Progress and Success Ratios: Develop metrics for tracking restricted fundraising success, include adherence to targets, efficiency ratios and other measures of restricted revenue. Facilitate ongoing meetings with fundraisers with significant restricted targets to review results and address any roadblocks that are preventing success.
  • Form Proposal Writing Teams: Identify when the HQ unit will have a significant role in project management of a grant writing process. Create a specific team to provide input into grant writing, assuring representation from National Offices, Regional and Country Offices and International Programs units as appropriate. If necessary, serve as primary project manager during the proposal writing phase and hand-off after winning to the appropriate implementation team.
  • Win Restricted Grants: Prospect and secure government and institutional grants in geographical locations either not covered by other units or where capacity is determined to be low. Prepare after-proposal reports, win-loss reports and hand-over documents for the appropriate implementation team.
Job Responsibility #2:
DEVELOP AND MANAGE THE GLOBAL RESTRICTED REVENUE STRATEGY AND BUSINESS PROCESSES (20% of Time):
„h Ongoing strategic Choices: Consult on and finalize a restricted revenue strategy, with a focus on government/institutional funds. Update and adjust the strategy as necessary. Ensure ongoing strategic choices are made and captured in operational plans, budgets and activity planning by multiple units.
  • Communicate the strategy: Assure that the relevant offices and units are clear on the strategy and are able to integrate this strategy into their work planning.
  • Systems: Assure there are the appropriate systems for sharing information, prospecting, grant -seeking and writing successful proposals to governments and institutions.
  • Business Processes: Develop the internal business policies and procedures to support this work (priority setting processes, revenue processes, proposal vetting processes, work team formation processes). Determine the need and requirement for supportive IT systems, such as CRM.
  • Prepare Operational Plans and Budgets: Create an annual business plan for the HQ unit to support the achievement of the overarching goals for restricted government and institutional funding in the 5 year strategic plan.
Job Responsibility #3:
COORDINATE GLOBAL EFFORTS TO RAISE RESTRICTED REVENUES (10% of Time):
  • Establish Global Priorities: Develop and maintain a priority list for grant -seeking purposes. This will require a good understanding of short to medium term program budgets, revenues and their sources and matching this with longer term program ambitions.
  • Communicate Global Priorities: Communicate the program priorities effectively and concisely to the grant-seeking staff. Secure the appropriate level of program information from the program teams to then communicate this to the grant seeking units. Report back to the organization quarterly on emerging priorities and goals and on progress towards those goals.
  • Track Grant-Seeking Efforts: Ensure there is a good internal market and matching system between the global program priorities and grant-seeking units. Systematically track and understand the global grant-seeking activity
Job Responsibility #4:
DEVELOP THE CAPACITY TO RAISE RESTRICTED FUNDS, WITH A FOCUS ON GOVERNMENT AND INSTITUTIONAL (30% of Time):
  • Provide Technical Support: Support the relevant global staff in the development of proposals and program and project communication materials. Provide input on government and institutional fundraising components of any National, Regional or Country Strategic Plans.
  • Build the Capacity: Convene global team meetings for staff focused on government and institutional fundraising. Assess skill gaps and development opportunities for global staff focused on government and institutional fundraising. Establish opportunities to meet regularly with appropriate National, Regional and Country Office staff to track progress, establish best practices and share resources and knowledge.
  • Develop Knowledge Base: Provide funding landscape assessments across the organization and in consultation with appropriate offices. Manage organizational knowledge in government and institutional grants, and ensure the information is transparently shared.
  • Develop Relationships: External, where appropriate, with major government and INGO donors. Internal, across functional teams and units.
  • Talent Management: Manage the team by using Right To Play¡¦s performance management system, including the setting of Goals, individual informal and formal reviews, performance appraisals, and other actions, as required. Oversee the creation of individual development plan, and lead the initiation of a succession plan for all direct reports. Facilitate development plans of global staff working on restricted fundraising, in consultation with their managers and with VP¡¦s focused on revenue generation.
EDUCATION/TRAINING/CERTIFICATION:
Required
  • Undergraduate degree in International Development, Political Science, International Relations or related field. Desired
  • Master¡¦s degree in a related field.
  • Project management certification.
  • Fluency in French, Arabic and Spanish.
EXPERIENCE
Required (must have):
  • 10-15 years of professional experience in role(s) with comparable levels of international complexity and technical relevance in both field and HQ contexts.
  • Solid knowledge of issues related to development and humanitarian programs, and international bodies and policy.
  • Proven experience developing major development and humanitarian proposals and securing funding from governments and institutions
  • Experience managing initiatives within complex, cross-functional organizations/ projects.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS REQUIRED:
  • Knowledge and understanding of International Development and Sport for Development and Peace sectors including issues, key players and stakeholders.
  • Understanding of donor rules and regulations.
  • Analytical and written skills, highlighted by the writing of proposals.
  • Understanding of budgeting, as it relates to grant writing.
  • Leading the development and overseeing the submission of major government grants.
  • Developing and supporting the development of key work processes and systems as they relate to proposal vetting, grant writing, priority setting and revenue planning.
  • Ability to provide oversight and leadership to cross-organizational initiatives.
  • Skill in supporting and coaching staff.
  • Ability to identify potential partners and strengthening existing relationships.
