PURPOSE OF CONSULTANCY SERVICE:
UNICEF Infrastructure Operators will work on a rotatable shift 7x24 that is subject to minimal notice for shift rotation or re-assignment. Major responsibilities will be to perform duties required in maintaining day to day operations within UNICEF’s New York Headquarters Data Centers. The operator will also be responsible for maintaining the integrity of all UNICEF systems and will be required to take proper corrective actions in case of system malfunctions. The operator will report to the Platform Operations Officer.
MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Job Description:
Under the supervision of the New York Headquarters Platform Operations Officer:
• Perform daily monitoring and logging by:
- periodically performing visual inspections
- running procedures/programs that will monitor and test all Data Centre and Telecommunications equipment, and associated applications
- entering results into corresponding logbooks and electronic forms and reviewing the results on a regular basis
- reviewing the central on-line system/CPU error logs to identify potential problems and taking corrective action as needed
- reporting any abnormalities or inconsistencies detected
- initiating vendor support request and coordinating the implementation of such service
- extracting information from the on-line and manual logs to produce statistical reports
- maintaining automated monitoring scripts
- maintaining a high level of integrity for all Data Centre logbooks.
• Maintain production control by:
- scheduling and running any off-hour system jobs using the appropriate system utilities, including the downloading and uploading of data exchanged between systems
- perform all Data Centre activities including system maintenance, VMware vSphere systems operations, operating system upgrades (WinTel, Sun Unix, HP Unix, etc.), installs of both hardware and software and system resets and shutdowns
- running housekeeping and system maintenance programs/scripts and procedures on a regular basis across all platforms to maintain a high level of system integrity and availability
- interacting closely with the Global Service Desk and applications owners in an effort to resolve systems problems.
• Perform backups and restores associated with normal daily backups across all platforms by:
- using HP Data Protector backup software
- maintaining the multiple series of media libraries that are currently being used for such backups.
• Perform Iron Mountain Data Recovery (off-site storage facility) tasks by:
- preparing backup tapes (media) for off-site storage
- scheduling and coordinating the secure pickup and retrieval of all media
• Maintain a high level of physical security within the Data Centre and ensure that it is maintained in a clean and safe operational environment
• Performs any other related duties as requested by supervisor
QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES:
Education:
- Completion of Secondary education (high school diploma) supplemented with training in Computer Operations.
Work Experience:
- 4 years practical experience hands on experience in a multi-platform computer operations environment, preferably in a large Multi-user installation
- Solid background in data center technologies
- Good knowledge of VMware vSphere systems operations and support in an enterprise environment
- Good knowledge of MS Windows operating systems and TCP/IP network protocol
- Ability to communicate electively, analyze and proactively troubleshoot technical problems, execute tasks in a timely manner.
- Experience with WinTel and UNIX O/S support

Languages: Fluency in English
Duration of the Consultancy: 11 Months
Location: The work will be performed at the UNICEF New York Headquarters
Proposed Remuneration: $200.00/daily. Travel Expenses will not be reimbursed.
