Job Description
Fenix International is seeking a highly motivated, organized, and experienced Strategic Initiatives Manager to lead the testing and scaling Fenix’s suite of products in Tanzania. This person will work with the Fenix team to coordinate field-testing, market research, technical testing, process optimization, reporting, operations, accounting, office management, HR & administrative support.
This position offers an incredible opportunity to work with an elite team of business professionals and engineers and directly contribute to the success of a venture-backed San Francisco startup operating in East Africa. Candidates must have a passion for renewable energy, entrepreneurship and technology in Frontier Markets. This position will be based in Dar es Salaam with some regional travel.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead product testing and pilots, monitoring, and evaluation of new Fenix products with telecom and other partners.
• Conduct market research to develop target customer profiles and evaluate pricing.
• Assess and troubleshoot customer experience and customer payment behavior.
• Collect, analyze, interpret, and present data collected from Fenix field studies, customer surveys, and Fenix employee experience.
• Plan, manage, and conduct product and process trainings with sales and customer service teams.
• Act as team leader for a small, dedicated group.
• Establish, document, and continuously improve processes.
• Maintain timelines, action item lists, and project plans.
• Establish groundwork for scaling the business.
• Help coordinate importing, storage, and domestic logistics for Fenix products.
• Communicate consistently, clearly, and honestly with East African staff to drive projects to conclusion.
• Contribute significantly to Fenix Product Development, Business Development, and Operations efforts.
Required Skills & Experience
• Three (3) years minimum work experience, ideally in Project Management, Operations, or Finance.
• Demonstrated teamwork, leadership, & project management experience. We are looking for entrepreneurial candidates who have started or contributed significantly to a particular project, team or new company and we especially value candidates who have seen projects through from start to finish, from design to scale up phase.
• Outstanding written and verbal communications skills (English).
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel (high), Access & Google Apps. Experience creating and managing budgets.
• Ability and drive to work independently.
• Bachelor’s degree.
• Passion for and commitment to growing a high-potential start-up company in East Africa.
Preferred Skills & Experience
• At least one year of work experience in East Africa, managing local staff and interacting with Base of the Pyramid customers.
• Business level competency in Kiswahili.
• Keen understanding of the mobile telecom and/or renewable energy industries.
• Understanding of rural Base of the Pyramid markets.
• Understanding of Quickbooks.
