We seek qualified candidates for the position of Director, Global Health Communication Department based in Washington DC.
Position Description:
Responsible for leading a large department (140 staff), including PhD and master’s level technical and program staff, the Department Director provides overall leadership, both technical and managerial, to the Department’s diverse project portfolio in support of FHI 360’s strategic plan, goals, and objectives. The incumbent should possess a high level of scientific, program, and management expertise and substantial experience relevant to behavior change communication. The job encompasses 3 main types of responsibilities: provision of technical assistance and oversight on selected projects; management of staff and project activities; and development of new Department business – all within a complex organizational framework.
Job Responsibilities:
● Provide leadership in raising new funds and strategically managing growth and direction of the Department; take lead responsibility for preparing the Department’s annual business plan; lead major Department proposal efforts.
● Provide overall leadership of high-profile Department projects.
● Ensure client and funder satisfaction and close relationships by monitoring, managing, and addressing client problems with good judgment as they arise.
● Ensure high quality project work in line with Department mission and objectives through periodic technical review.
● Ensure sound financial management of the Department and its projects. Ensure that project budgets are balanced with no losses; personnel and systems are in place for managing, monitoring, and reporting finances, including cost share; and the Department budget target for the year is met or exceeded.
● Contribute to furthering the state-of-the-art in global health communication and marketing; advance FHI 360’s capacity and reputation externally through publications, presentations, and other professional activities.
● Engage and motivate Department staff to meet project and Department objectives; hire and retain capable staff; provide staff development opportunities; support FHI 360 diversity objectives and initiatives; and facilitate rewarding work opportunities for staff.
● Promote and nurture fruitful collaboration with other FHI 360 Departments; participate in other cross-cutting and multidisciplinary activities in support of FHI 360 initiatives.
● Support the work of the Director of the GHPN Group.
Minimum Requirements :
● PhD or Master’s level in social science, public health, or related field with a minimum of 15 years’ relevant experience in social and behavioral change communication which includes at least 7 years of relevant supervisory experience; understanding and knowledge of current trends in health communication and behavior change.
● Excellent leadership and management skills.
● Excellent organizational, oral and written communication and problem-solving skills.
● Demonstrated ability to facilitate complex relationships between organizations and individuals, and to interact smoothly and effectively with clients, colleagues, and the public, with an emphasis on client service.
● Strong consultation skills (i.e. diagnostic, assessment, technical assistance).
● Established position and excellent professional reputation among peer groups, competitors, colleagues, and donors.
● Strong relationships and credibility with the international development community.
● Knowledge of effective personnel management practices.
● Demonstrated experience in managing a large organizational unit, with good interpersonal and supervisory skills.
● Substantial experience designing, working in, and conducting large-scale programs and/or research in developing countries.
● Substantive record of technical publications or presentations.
● Knowledge of how to manage large business proposals.
● Ability and willingness to travel nationally and internationally as needed, including travel to developing countries.
● Excellent oral and written English communication skills.
