One year placement
Please note that the selected applicant will be required to take up the placement by February 2012 at the latest.
The Programme and Capacity Building Adviser will be placed in SONYO (Somaliland National Youth Organization) and work alongside key staff in the organisation on a daily basis building their knowledge and skills in regard to effective, participatory and democratic governance, and supporting implementation of project activities by providing ongoing mentoring and on-the-job coaching.
The successful candidate should have a Master degree level qualification in community development.
A minimum of four years’ work experience within the NGO sector in a support/advisory capacity is essential, as well as experience of democratic participation and governance, including campaigning, research, policy analysis, advocacy, community mobilisation, civic education and networking. Demonstrable experience of effective project development and management, monitoring and evaluation; youth capacity building for a youth organisation/ umbrella; and in training/ facilitation methodologies (including direct training) are also required.
You should have an understanding of the issues facing a post-conflict society; of the role which NGOs play in democratisation; the ability to develop and analyse youth related policies, skills in gender mainstreaming, and a genuine interest in working with youth and in understanding their strategic role/contributions to the construction of a democratic and participative society.
You also need to have an skills in participatory project development, monitoring and evaluation methods; excellent team building, interpersonal, communication and networking skills; excellent analytical, report writing and presentation skills, and excellent time-management and organisational skills.
Willingness to undertake road travel in Somaliland; cultural sensitivity in an Islamic/ Somali environment; flexibility and the ability to live and work effectively in a resource poor environment, with limited leisure facilities, and personal commitment to learning the basics of the Somali language are also essential.
