Your Mission: We seek a laboratory expert to be based in Geneva, Switzerland, with a sound background in laboratory aspects and diagnosis of hepatitis and HIV, health systems, and experience in laboratory capacity strengthening in low- and middle-income countries. You will be responsible for leading the laboratory strengthening component of our recently established Hepatitis and HIV Programme, which aims to remove diagnostic barriers that prevent countries from scaling up hepatitis care and supporting global HIV prevention, care, and treatment goals.
Your Responsibilities: Your primary responsibility will be to coordinate the laboratory components of FIND’s hepatitis C and HIV projects, notably a major grant-funded, multi-year, multi-country project to build hepatitis C diagnostic and treatment capacity in eight countries, in collaboration with multiple international and local partner organizations. Your responsibilities include:
- Work with laboratory experts and Ministries of Health in multiple countries and from WHO to develop and implement hepatitis C laboratory policies, guidelines, and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Design and coordinate the laboratory components of a multi-year, large-scale demonstration project, including plans to collect laboratory quality, cost, and costeffectiveness data for new hepatitis C diagnostic algorithms that can support policy change
- Support registration of new diagnostics at national and global levels, working with industry partners & interact with procurement team to ensure timely arrival of commodities
- Design and implement quality assurance programmes for hepatitis diagnostics in resource-limited settings
- Identify needs and plan for lab infrastructure improvements
- Manage laboratory strengthening team(s) in countries focused on hepatitis C programmatic capacity building
- With other members of the FIND team, support academic- and industry-based diagnostics development for hepatitis and HIV R&D, through the creation of product specifications and target product profiles (TPPs)
- Establish and maintain links with academic and private sector organizations to keep abreast with new developments in relevant diagnostics technologies
- Communicate programme achievements through publications and scientific presentations
- In collaboration with the CEO, leadership team and Programme team, participate in setting strategic goals for the Hepatitis C and HIV Programme, and help to mobilize resources for Programme activities
- Build relationships with other leading diagnostics development agencies and promote FIND’s expertise in this field
- Participate in development of grants
Education, knowledge, and skill requirements:
- Advanced degree in laboratory medicine, such as a PhD or an MSc. in medical science strongly preferred
- At least five years’ experience and strong scientific background in research, microbiology, and/or clinical laboratory medicine
- Demonstrable understanding of hepatitis and HIV laboratory medicine and related public health issues required; a solid understanding of other infectious diseases would be an added benefit
- Relevant experience working in laboratory medicine in low- and middle-income countries, including the drafting, validation, and implementation of laboratory SOPs
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and strong presentation skills
- Knowledge of diagnostics regulatory requirements (WHO, FDA, and CE-IVD Mark) strongly preferred
- Ability to work independently and flexibly in a resource-limited environment
- Team player comfortable working in a multi-cultural environment
- Fluent in verbal and written English; other languages are a strong advantage, particularly French and Spanish
