The appointment is limited to the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals. Appointment of the successful candidate on this position will be limited to the initial funding of the post. Extension of the appointment is subject to the extension of the mandate and/or the availability of funds. As the international tribunals are not integrated in the Secretariat, UN Staff Members serve on assignment or secondment from their parent department/office if selected. Appointments of staff members in the United Nations are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General. Staff Members are expected to move periodically to new functions in accordance with established rules and procedures, and may in this context be reassigned by the Secretary-General throughout the Organization based on the changing needs and mandates.
Organizational Setting and Reporting
This position is located at the United Nations Detention Facility ('UNDF'), Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals ('Mechanism'). Under the overall command of the UNDF Commanding Officer and the direct supervision of the Operations Officer, the incumbent will provide support to UNDF.
Responsibilities
Under the overall command of the UNDF Commanding Officer, direct supervision and technical oversight of the Security and Operations Officer, the Security Sergeant will be responsible for the following duties
- Conducts daily briefings and assign officers to various posts and functions at UNDF;
- Responsible for the maintenance of the shift duty roster, personally inspects officers assigned to his/her squad, prior to the assumption of the post;
- Assists in the preparation of the security plans;
- Conducts and supervises detainees activities and maintains the good order while on shift within UNDF premises;
- Oversees the official clearance and entry of all visitors and staff;
- Supervises staff and carries out inspections to ensure that security officers and Tanzania Prison Officers duty are discharging functions appropriately;
- Responsible for overall equipment/weapon inventory and safe keeping assigned to the shift;
- Briefs officers under command of possible security threats and related operational plans;
- Submits final reports and recommendations to immediate supervisor in connection with shift activities;
- Prepares written reports of all unusual incidents;
- Liaises and meets as necessary with the Tanzania Prison Team Leaders or as directed by immediate supervisor, regarding the security of UNDF;
- Counsels and trains security officers and Tanzanian Prison Officers under command;
- Attends morning unlock and evening lock up of detainees, supervises their exercise, checks their attendance at meals, receives complaints and requests, records and supervises their telephone outgoing and incoming calls and reports incidents to the Operations Officer.
- Provides positive guidance so that good order is kept at the Detention Facility in full respect of new detention rules;
- Performs any other duties as required.
