Established in 1951, IOM is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration and works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.
Context:
The regular responsibilities of the Office of Legal Affairs are: (a) to provide advice on legal and constitutional matters to IOM’s governing bodies, the Administration and all IOM offices; (b) to provide information on and keep a record of the amendments to the Constitution and ratifications; (c) to prepare, negotiate and oversee agreements on IOM privileges and immunities; (d) to provide advice on requirements for membership and observership; (e) to coordinate all documents and draft resolutions submitted to the governing body sessions; (f) to conduct research and produce papers on the legal and policy aspects of IOM objectives and functions; (g) to prepare, negotiate and coordinate agreements, contracts and memorandums of understanding; (h) to prepare the Administration’s submissions in staff appeal cases lodged with the Joint Administrative Review Board and with the International Labour Organization Administrative Tribunal; (i) to analyze and provide advice on legal aspects of human resource management; (j) to analyze and provide advice on legal aspects of financial and management issues; and (k) to lead on IOM data protection issues.
SUPERVISION
The Intern will work under the guidance and supervision of the Division Head of the Office of the Legal Counsel and in cooperation with other colleagues.
Core Functions / Responsibilities:
- Support LEG to work on a variety of in-house legal issues, including IOM’s legal status, including privileges and immunities, governing bodies, constitution and mandate of IOM, intellectual property rights, and data protection.
- Assist in the determination of legal or constitutional queries which are sent to the Office of Legal Affairs.
- Assist in preparing or reviewing organizational policy documents, reports, papers or speeches on various legal issues.
- Assist in review of contracts and agreements for IOM offices and headquarters departments.
- Assist in drafting research papers on various legal issues.
- Perform such other duties as may be requested by the Division Head of the Office of the Legal Counsel.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
Education • University degree in law, from an accredited academic institution; Master’s degree, in particular in international law is an advantage.
Experience • Experience with or knowledge of UN or alike organizations, in particular in their legal department, is an advantage. • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously in a team of colleagues of varied cultural and professional backgrounds. • Ability to produce quality work accurately and concisely according to set deadlines in accordance with instructions and guidelines. • Practical experience of how to multi-task, prioritize and work independently. • Good analytical, drafting and research skills. • Excellent communication skills. • Good level of computer literacy. • Strong organizational skills.
Languages Fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of French and/or Spanish is an advantage. Desirable Competencies:

Other: Personal Development The incumbent will acquire technical knowledge in the area of Ethics and Conduct Management. He/She will also gain in-site experience in working in an international multi-cultural environment, with an intergovernmental organization.
Carte de Legitimation The organization will obtain the ‘carte de legitimation’ for the duration of the internship for the selected candidate. A monthly stipend will be paid.
